True. Then again, too much familiarity can also turn off an audience also, reducing them to current trends of only listening in the car or at work. It is what causes the audience to get bored and turn to Satellite Radio and iPods for entertainment. I tend to remember a stunt back in the 90’s pointing this out. 106.5 had a small playlist and a tagline of, “We’re the imitator not the innovator.” Poking fun at sound a like stations up and down the dial. Again, I’m not saying reinvent the wheel, but what I will say is it can payoff to do something different and not be afraid to push the envelope with formats. Kind of like a KLO Salt Lake City, or 91X San Diego. Freshen it up with a Classic meets Modern Alternative Rock approach. Play plenty of the old with a few currents each hour and give it a presentation to make people notice and want to tune in. If it works great. If not, at least you could say that you dared to shake up the KC market a little bit and have fun with it. Replies:
