Rules

• The Lagoon is where homeless stallions come to live as a brotherhood. Mares may not live here except as captives or companions for the Leaders.

• Soldiers keep mainly to fighting, Thieves keep mainly to raiding, and Associates may do both, neither, or act as diplomats. Members may issue their own battles and raids, but should generally consult the General, Marauder or Boss for permission.

• All major decisions are determined by vote, but the Boss maintains order within the Lagoon and has the final say.

• Elections for leadership positions will be held every TLI summer, provided the qualifying criteria are met.

• You can find detailed information about how the Lagoon works on the Rules page.

• Upon election, the Boss can issue a rule for members to follow during their tenure. It is up to leadership to enforce.

Lavender
soft spoken in the dead of night

[[Light trigger warning for difficult birth, but nothing graphic]]

Nothing had turned out the way Lavender had hoped. Ursa was still missing from her, she hadn't been able to slip free of the Lagoon, and despite the fortune of running into Lir again, once more, he had been wounded on behalf of her and chased from the boundary. Even before Khyber had found her, Lavender resolved in her heart not to seek for Lir. Surely he had his own family somewhere that needed him, and who was she, that he'd risk everything for? Just a stranger he'd happened to come across in the Commons, barely enough time to say hello before a shadow had come and snatched her away.

After their unexpected and shortlived reunion in the Commons, Lavender had returned, despondent, and the first to come across her, where she'd tucked herself somewhere away from the edge of the bog, had been Khyber. "I don't want to be alone tonight," she had admitted to him softly, eyes sad, and pleading. He wasn't who she wanted, but he was there, and he gave her what she asked - solid warmth to lean against, affection given freely when she tentatively sought for it, no matter that she'd wake to the dawn, cold and alone.

-----

Months later, she staggered through the Lagoon, almost faint from the pain of the contractions that rippled though her belly, instinctively seeking somewhere sheltered, to give birth to her first child. The agony of it brought her to her knees, and choking on a cry, she sagged onto her side. She drifted in and out of consciousness, stirring when the pain seized hold of her, weakly shifting her legs, pushing until she had nothing left to give. And just when she was about to give up, she heard a whisper, saying 'Have faith, Lavender,' and then she heard another sound - a weak cry from her newborn child. A second wind bore her up just long enough to twist about and free the foal - a colt - and grant him breath, before she collapsed, jaw rattling painfully.

Too late, she became aware of movement nearby, and with what little clarity she had in that moment, all Lavender could think was that she was glad to be in the Lagoon, where any threat to her son would have to go through a band of brothers first. Another sound, and the little overo blinked her eyes and tried to focus, but there was nothing in her field of vision to give her any sign of who it was.

"Ursa?" she whispered under her breath, gathering strength enough to move her head, wincing at even that subtle movement, her smudged with dirt and feeling tender. She swallowed a second name, not daring to hope, but the third she choked out, tears of pain, desperation blurring her vision, so that she could not see who it was that approached from the gloom. "Khy... Khyber..." The newborn foal shifted where he lay sprawled in a vulnerable tangle near her hind legs. Drawing in a breath that shuddered in her lungs, Lavender struggled to raise her muzzle. "P-Please," the golden palomino mare begged. The child she had brought into the world, giving nearly all of her strength to do so, was a son of the Lagoon. Surely that meant something.

Lavender might not matter to any of them... Not that she'd made an effort to endear herself to any of them, too wrapped up in worry and grief over her lost friend, too ruled by fear, because she was so small and weak, and she had come to know the strength and ferocity of the Lagoon and their numbers, and the tenacity with which they fought for what was <>theirs. But the white patched colt, sired by one of their own - their Marauder - would be precious to them.

She was a mother now, and though it hadn't turned out the way she'd dreamed when she'd been a starry-eyed filly, her own welfare was secondary now. All that mattered to the weak and weary overo mare was that the tiny colt survived. "Help... Help him."
