give me darkness when I'm dreaming; Posted on March 19, 2025 at 04:26:20 AM by Arroyo
When he looks into his soul he sees a depthless ocean. There is no shoreline in any direction. Only blue within blue. Little fish flit in and out of view, mercurial. He stares into the darkness, a presence looming large within the depths, but just out of sight. He is curious, but also afraid. When the white speckled skin of a blue whale rises up, his eyes go wide and his muscles stiff.
He gasps and the gray light of late morning pulls him groggily back to ground. He squeezes his eyes closed and breathes deeply in, opening his eyes on the world as his breath releases again.
He is often drawn to the beach. In times of unrest and in times of peace. He goes there now, the hush of waves enticing him.
Deirdre is there, and he pauses in the salt grasses to watch her. The way the sun glows softly on her skin reminds him of their days in the Thicket. Those were easy days with her. The corner of his lips curves into a half smile and he moves to join her.
"My love," he says in getting, coming to rest alongside her. He reaches to brush his lips along her neck. It has been so long since it has been just the two of them. He closes his eyes and pulls away to look at her face.
He cannot read her mind, but they've been together long enough that he can tell that something is bothering her.
"What is troubling you, my heart?" he asks and hopes that she will tell him. Replies: There have been no replies.
