It was safe to leave the Peak whenever she felt like it. The tovero had told her daughter as much when Saphris had finally been returned to her. Her sweet daughter had been less than forthcoming about what had happened in the months mother and daughter had been apart. It worried Emerson to have Saphris be so reticent when there had never been secrets between them before. Had so much really changed between them in the months they'd be separated?

In the interest of setting a good example for her daughter and giving the girl the space she needed, Emerson had set off in a southerly direction. Her hooves eventually carried her out of the bounds of the Peak and into the wide grassy Meadow. She wanted to look forward to getting out again. Emerson had always loved wandering by herself before the Lagoon. The mare hated the thought of letting the men there take that from her; so she braved the openness of the land.

Her hooves sank into the loamy soil and brushed over fallen, wind-swept leaves as Emerson breached the wide plain. The black tovero did not look around at the land that spread around her. She kept her gaze strictly forward, unwilling to chance contact with a stranger yet. Nerves still bundled tightly in her gut, and she hated the weakness she imagined it represented. After a few mouthfuls of bluegrass, Emerson did dare to look around... and someone was there, not far and looking at her.

Unsure, her ears loosely pin as her sense of apprehension increased. Emerson took a deep breath. This was the Meadow. She was a member of the Peak now, not some sea-tossed maiden anymore. There was nothing for her to fear from a little eye contact. After a heartbeat or three, the tovero mare tipped her head in a stiff nod to the figure, but did not further engage. She wanted to see what they would do unprompted.

Emerson
