“I never for one moment thought that when I washed up on your beach that -this- would ever happen.” Their noses touched— a gentle show of affection between the two adults— and Canis smiled softly. He had hoped for this happy result. It had been his wish for Hellfyre that she find the happiness she had always wanted, that the life she led be a fortunate one. Canis would have stepped aside if the silver bay had chosen another male. However, the silver grullo was pleased that there had been no need; Hellfyre had decided to stay and build that life with him.
His mismatched eyes dipped to the tiny red filly at the silver mare’s side, observing her thoughtfully and making playful face at her. The stallion shifted his weight at the change of tone in Hellfyre's voice. Even this snippet if information is sobering to him. The place she had left behind wasn't a place he could imagine growing up or raising his children. Then again, Canis was no product of wartime. His childhood had been a slow and often lonely time spent on the brink of the sandy wilds of Salem. He had never needed to imagine such a way of life as hers.
"I cannot imagine training children for war.." The stallion's voice was restrained in the face of the little filly-- not wanting the tone of his voice entirely hollowed by his disbelief and sadness. How fortunate Hellfyre had been to escape such a place! There was no way for Canis to change what had happened to the lovely mare at his side or right the wrongs that had been done to her. All he could do was protect her and their daughter to the best of his ability.
"She will never know such strife," he murmured in a low, affectionate way. It would be a promise the silver grullo would do his best to keep.
