well, there is a distinct difference between pari mutuels and sports betting.
One you are betting against the other bettors (the house doesn't lose, except in cases of low handle as we are all aware for the last 30-years for jaialai) while sports betting the house is the bookie and they should ultimately be the long-term winner with the vig.
Now in the days of illegal bookmaking, say Jimmy got to be pretty good at picking the NFL games and even possibly had some insider info about player condition/ills, broken romance, etc and had an edge and bookie Guido started taking a loss and cut Jimmy back on his bets would you be surprised? And then Jimmy starts to tell a few close friends to start betting with Guido so Jimmy can make what Jimmy feels is his due right profit.....wonder what Guido gonna do when he finds out? I would not wanna be poor ole Jimmy. Seems Jimmy was looking at the NFL games as a retirement plan when it shoulda just been for some entertainment, but oh well, one day Jimmy just up and disappeared......of course Guido says Jimmy who?
