Amaryllis

The full moon was high in the night sky bathing the land in a cold light. The area around the falls was shrouded in a thin layer of mist accentuating the sense of mysticism. From between the sparse scattering of trees a monster ambled and trudged their way towards the pool of water at the base of the falls. Upon a closer inspection one would soon realize that it wasn’t a monster but a mare, a relatively tall and broad set mare. Every inch of her body was plastered in a thick layer of mud from her nose to the tips of her hooves. Every now and then a dollop of muck would slide off the more rounded areas of her body and slop onto the floor in a comical thud.

Amaryllis still isn’t certain how she managed to free herself from that death trap she had stupidly wandered into. Of course it had been a waiting game for the rain to stop but once it had she was able to fight her way out of the mud pit that was the Meadow. Although exisitance had felt difficult for the last few years; it was not time for the brooding mare to join her mother and other departed relatives. Sabah, a mare she had barely known outside of sparring, had stayed with her the whole time. The painted mare had offered comfort and emotional support. Having company had certainly made the hours tick by faster and Amaryllis had made a mental note to repay her friend for that kindness at a later date.

As Amaryllis reached the edge of the water she hesitated momentarily. It was an autumnal night and the temperature of the pool was going to be frigid. She wasn’t a vain creature that took pride in her appearance but she was coated in an unacceptable amount of mud, to the point where she could feel the few extra pounds weighing her down. With a hearty sigh she stepped into the water and waded briskly towards the falls. There she stood below the cascading water with her hazel eyes closed. Within a few moments her beautiful sable champagne coat began to shine through.
