It occured to me that I was in the KC market for some 30 years, and watched a fair amount of local TV, having been in it as well. I don't ever remember we or anybody else covered the auto plants from the inside. They'd run 3 weather segments, and every crime in the area but once they filled their newscasts, reporters just went home to the next day picking only the low hanging fruit.
For some reason TV never staffed based on assigned economic or lifestyle 'beats'... they waited til the local paper broke the stories and then just grabbed a piece of it for the evening news.
If you watch the networks, they don't even use content from affiliates, except when its spot news like plane crash or big fire. The sensational shit, well ABC wrote the playbook last year, and now all 3 networks sound like ABC put em together, but the other two just don't have Breaking News Tonight David Muir and his hair on fire!
