BEHIND THOSE ANGEL EYESLIES A DEVIL IN DISGUISE

A wry smile twisted her lips at Lucifer's response. He was right - queens did deserve more than a little, and Mazikeen was intent on taking everything and anything she deserved without reservation or hesitation. She deserved all the power she could get, she deserved a stallion who adored her, she deserved for her name to be known. She had two of the three, but that was still not enough. But she was nothing if not tenacious - she would make a name for herself yet.

And what of the stallion before her? What were his ambitions, she wondered? Did he desire power and infamy in the same way she did? He certainly cut an intimidating figure, a beast that seemed to step straight from a child's nightmare. She found herself drawn by the darkness that seemed to seep from his pores like oil from the ground. But Mazikeen had learned long ago that everyone carried a bit of darkness within them, in some form or another - whether it was the pain of loss, or the bitterness of regret, or the scorching flame of fury. Where did his darkness stem from?

Mazikeen was eager to find out.

The spotted mare's wavering attention was drawn back to him when he spoke again. Mazikeen fixed him with a curious look, her eyes flicking across his face. "A creature of sentiment, are you?" She wouldn't expect such nostalgia from such a brutish looking creature - certain proof that first impressions were not wholly reliable.

If she were a believer in propriety, she would have asked after this firstborn child of his. As it were she was wholly uninterested in any child that wasn't her own. Besides, she figured, he would tell her if he wanted to.

Mazikeen's ears twisted, taking in the distant sound of a snapping twig, of the lone cry of a crow from the canopy. Her eyes drifted across the forest, lingering on the leaf-bare branches that sway above them. "I'm curious how things have been on Salem lately. I lived there once, in the Dunes with Helios. Perhaps you know of him?" Mazikeen made a point not to inquire about his well-being; to be frank, she cared very little for Helios' happiness or health. For as handsome as he was, he had proven himself to be unworthy of her affections. She had lost any ability to care for him when he traded her son like chattel with nary a second thought.
