DISCUSSION (OPEN UNTIL JAN 22) Posted on January 7, 2026 at 07:33:45 PM by loveinspired
Hello everyone! We've got another discussion topic ready for your input. This time, we are taking a look at roleplay battles.
Roleplay battles are often high-risk and high-reward. They require more effort the participating members and from the moderator making the judgement. What we have noticed is that with shorter roleplay battles - especially those that are composed of only 1 post from each member - are very hard to compare. Some of the key aspects we look for, such as realism, cannot be judged the same way with only one character having to react to what the other character does.
This has, as you've probably noticed, resulted in a few ties last year when the judgments were so close that the moderators could not call it. As ties are not something we have had in the past, we were looking for your input as to what should happen if a tie is called. In no way do we want to invalidate the effort and work put into these roleplay battles, and so we want to find a solution that works for the majority.
In the two ties we have experienced this year, the options we have offered are:
- Allowing both players to make 1 additional battle post each, which will then be judged
- A 50/50 coin flip
- Having another moderator judge the battle (this has always been an option in roleplay battles if a player feels the judgment is unfair)
However, these options require that both players come to an agreement and if an agreement can't be reached, the battle will be voided. Currently, there is no set timeline on reaching an agreement post-battle in the event of a tie.
As ties do include extra work, we were considering some possible changes to how roleplay battles function. Two of the main ideas we have come up with are:
A. Requiring that both participants have the same number of attacks and defenses. This may result in situations where one of the players may have to post twice while the other player posts once. (example: Joe enters/attacks, Susie enters/defends/attacks, and Joe defends).
B. Requiring that there is a minimum of 2 posts per player so that each player must respond to the other player's post at least once. (example: Joe enters/attacks/defends, Susie enters/defends/attacks, Joe defends/attacks, Susie defends/ends battle).
We are looking for your input! The questions we have are:
1. In the event of a tie, does requiring a mutual decision within a week sound reasonable? If additional RP battle posts are selected, standard battle time limits would apply for the follow-up posts.
2. In regard to any additional requirements to roleplay battles, do you like option A or B? Why or why not? Or do you have another idea or perspective we haven't mentioned yet?
This discussion will close in two weeks' time, on January 22nd. Replies:
