As of April 13, 2026, the U.S. has instituted a military blockade targeting traffic to and from Iranian ports, but it is unlikely to directly attack oil tankers due to the risk of major environmental disasters.
Instead, the U.S. strategy focuses on the following:
•Interdiction and Seizure: The U.S. Navy has been directed to seek and interdict any vessel that has paid what President Trump called an "illegal toll" to Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz (Pancho-tankers). This may involve ordering ships to change direction or boarding them under "prize law," which allows belligerents to capture merchant vessels carrying contraband.
•Targeted Elimination: President Trump has explicitly warned that Iranian "fast attack ships" (military/paramilitary craft) that approach the U.S. blockade will be "immediately eliminated".
•Selective Blockade: While the blockade is "enforced impartially against vessels of all nations" entering or departing Iranian ports, U.S. Central Command clarified that it would not impede traffic traveling to and from non-Iranian ports, such as those of allied Gulf countries.
•Operational Risk: The U.S. has declared it will interdict any vessel that has paid "transit tolls" to Iran, which it labels as "world extortion". If a Spanish tanker follows Iranian "clearance" procedures that involve such payments, it may be subject to boarding or seizure by the U.S. Navy.
