Don’t you want to come with me? Juliette

Scott sighed contentedly, leaving behind the peace of deep sleep, but hovering upon its edge in a blissful doze, unaware of the dramas about to unfurl. On the coffee table which stood a few inches away from his knees, stood two beer bottles, one empty and the other half-full, the lids lying upside down beside the glass containers. It was the early hours of the morning, and it was still pitch black outside, a combination of the natural darkness of the winter and the artificial bleakness of the ash which still hovered in the air like some unwanted pestilence. The curtains of the house remained open, the slumber of the two figures on the sofa having been accidental and unintended, neither of them had thought to prepare the building for night-time. Outside, the sound of an hooting owl sounded, and Scott was dragged further from the world of slumber and into the land of the waking, enough for the man to take note of the sound, though not enough for any real clarity of thought to be triggered. It seemed peaceful enough.

The sound of a shouting child, was at first paid very little attention by the snoozing man, he did not hear the words, simply an annoying noise which seemed to be coming from far away. It had had more of an effect than it first appeared however, as Scott slowly became aware of a weight upon his shoulder and the presence of a warm hand pressed lightly against his chest. He and Juliet had obviously dozed off on the sofa the evening before, but that did not quite explain the shouting noise which seemed to be growing louder and more urgent. Scott blinked, his brown eyes opening slowly, before closing once more in an attempt to blink away the sleep which still haunted him. A hand moved up towards his face and rubbed his eyes as he returned himself to a more up-right position. He jumped as someone started to knock frantically at the front door, and finally he heard what they were saying.

Concerned gaze travelled to the girl beside him, his arm still around her shoulders as it had been all night. It would have been a wonder if she had managed to sleep through the barrage which had been inflicted upon the door. It might have been his imagination, but Scott was half-convinced that he could already hear the roaring of the great wave which was heading for them, and was frustrated by the fact that his teleportation powers did not allow passengers. If it had then he would have been able to get Juliette to safety more quickly, as it was, he would have to do it the hard way, along with everybody else.

It was not really in Scott’s nature to stay behind and help other people when a life threatening situation was at hand, but there was something about Julie, something he had not experienced before, which made him feel that her life, was, somehow, worth more than his. “Come on,” he said in his deep voice, folding the fingers of his hand around her own smaller one, and moving rapidly towards the door. His free hand reached forwards and pulled open the door, eyes hovering on the residents of the Labyrinth who were already running towards the Core. “Keep hold of me, whatever happens, keep hold of my hand.”
