At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

As their conversation progressed Mae found herself glad that she’d diverted course to end up where she was. So far Terrel had been a friendly and kind presence and she found a smile fixed on her face as they spoke. After settling in the pack, she’d been apprehensive about meeting wolves that were such a close knit group but the multi-coloured male made her look forward to getting to know the rest of the pack. If they were all as welcoming as he’d been she’d have no trouble. Their talk turned to their pasts and after finding out the young age he’d been adopted, the femme’s own home came up. His curiosity was obvious as she drew her gaze from the river back to him, noticing the slight tilt of his head. However his tone held the same sort of caution her own had.

“I don’t mind you asking,” she smiled, “I haven’t really thought about it since I left, so I guess I got a bit lost in memories.” She laughed, images of her favourite spots and memories that stood out flashing through her mind. “At first it was too painful to think about, but after that I had other things on my mind so it hasn’t come up. I think I already told you it was hot there, much more so than here, and the weather was never extreme in regards to the cold or wet. During the summer it often got too hot; my coat’s not really suited to that sort of climate, but it was home and I miss it sometimes.” Her mother had come from further north, where a pale grey coat was more desirable than the sandier colours that helped the pack she’d been born into. She’d inherited the slender build and silkier fur texture from her father, but the colour and relative thickness came from her mother.

Mae grinned as Terrel agreed that he’d also stick by his mother, further evidence of the close family feel of the pack. They were all there to help one another, and strong on top of that, with family bonds within the pack tying wolves together with even more strength. She was kicked out of her thoughts by the crows, which got as nasty a glare as the kind hearted femme could send in their direction, before the pair continued conversing. Her eyes twinkled with amusement as the male grumbled at her, shifting against the rocks, but she didn’t want to push anything not knowing the limit of his temper. Another quiet yawn escaped her and she turned her gaze back to the river.

There were no other wolves around at the moment, nest building birds their only company, but scents were littered over the rocks. The water carried scents away, hidden in its depths, but it wasn’t hard to tell who had gone where if one searched on both sides of the falls. She wondered where those wolves, nameless strangers without a pack, were lurking now. One could only see so far into the trees before they faded into darkness. The thought made her shiver a little, wondering whether they were being watched right now. However, she felt at peace and decided to forget about that. It was strange how dependant she was beginning to get on knowing that the only wolves surrounding her were her pack mates, and she wasn’t sure whether she liked that feeling or not. It was probably partly positive and partly negative.

She looked back to Terrel as he asked her his next question, the shy wall coming back up as she let him know that she’d like them to consider each other friends. She already thought of him as such, for she knew him better than the rest of the pack. She’d seen other members a couple of times, but he was the only one she’d actually sat and talked with, and she knew a little about his past as he did hers. She was tense for a moment, anxious, before he confirmed that he wanted to be friends with her. A relieved grin spread across her face as her tail thumped against the rocks a couple of times in a visible display of how glad she felt that the feeling was mutual. She now had a definite friend within Saw Tooth, a beginning to build up her new life there. It was all well and good being ranked, but that didn’t count for much if you didn’t know any of the wolves.

The topic changed to that she’d been thinking about; ranks, and a thoughtful look crossed her features. “Well…if I could be any rank I’d like to be Gamma or Beta, once I know my pack mates well enough of course. I don’t think I could handle ruling a pack but I’d like a position where I’d be able to help out my family and look after my friends. What rank would be your choice?” The pale grey femme glanced up to the sky for a moment and a slight frown appeared on her features at a couple of dark clouds dotting the sky. She really hoped it wouldn’t rain. Casting the thought away before she worried, she turned back to hear Terrel’s answer on ranks.
