How lonely is the night without the howl of the wolf?

Channing’s face creased into a smile as the brute jumped at the sound that emanated from his throat. Clearly he wasn’t used to laughing. Though she was happy the lad was laughing and smiling, she couldn’t help but wonder why he was laughing. Was it something she said? The timber ess didn’t have long to think about what could be making him chuckle as he carried on with the story he had started previously. Her auds flickered as he explained that his father had died at the hands of a plague and Channing smiled softly. She knew how hard it was too loose a loved one and she wanted to let him know that he wasn’t alone. He then explained that he and a wolf named Kahlan... ‘Oh that must be his sister!’ Channing thought to herself. Anyway, they had returned here together after being separated. The ess kept her eyes on the brute, watching his body language and posture. She could only wonder where his sister was now and whether she had joined Sawtooth with him. The ess did notice that the lad’s speech was stuttered. It sounded like a young pup, who had just learnt to speak, was telling her a story. She smiled once again; his speech would get better with time; she was sure of it.

It was clear to the fae that she would learn more about this brute through his body language than through any amount of speech. It was as if there was something deep within that was bugging him. His gaze turned away from hers as if some horrible memory had dug its way free from the darkest part of his mind. The lass gulped slightly, swallowing the urge to nuzzle him. She was so used to doing it to her son whenever he was upset that it had sort of become a habit. However in the time it took for her to compose herself, it seemed he had done so too. His face turned back to the stone it had been when they had first started speaking and the lass sighed quietly to herself. She had found herself enjoying the lads company and to be honest she didn’t want to stop the conversation.

A forced smile appeared on the lad’s maw and the lass smiled back. She hoped that the conversation wouldn’t end there and to her delight it didn’t. The lad opened his maw and began to answer the question she had asked a little while ago. She couldn’t help but chuckle herself as he told her that his sister had wanted him to come here. He obviously cared for his sister or else he wouldn’t have come here. The once forced smile changed to and easy smile and the lass was glad that he wasn’t drowned in his fears. It was clear that he had realised how the answer sounded and the lass couldn’t help but giggle slightly. She hadn’t minded at all. She knew he didn’t mean any harm. “Henadin it’s fine. I didn’t take it to heart.” She smiled at the brute hoping to assure him that she was not upset by his comments. Channing could tell he was uncomfortable by the way he shuffled and shifted his weight and the ess thought that another question would maybe take his mind of the last comment.

“Would you like to walk with me?” The athletic limbs of the ess where starting to ache. She was used to walking a lot and sitting down for long periods of time did no good for her limbs. She stood slowly, her eyes gazing towards the river. Before they went anywhere she would have to have a drink but then they were free to go wherever they pleased. Channing hoped dearly that her new acquaintance would walk with her. His company was actually quiet soothing.
