At Leisure Lake the sun is always shining and only a few stray clouds roam the open sky; paradise is the one word that really describes it. This beautiful lake is clean and refreshing, the very best place to swim and fish. Pups are known to play here while older wolves watch at the side, engaged in their own activities.

Mae had left Saw Tooth the previous day, taking a brief break from the pack to wander the unclaimed lands surrounding their territory. She intended to return within a couple of days at most, but for everyone a chance to explore was sometimes needed. She knew their terrain, understand every aspect of the land they owned, and was excited by the prospect of discovering something new. After the pack hunt, and spending more time with the mute boy and Macaria, two pups she was rather fond of, Mae needed some time alone, or to find the company of another adult. The thought of approaching a stranger for company was less daunting than it had once been, but still undesirable. Strangers were not pack approved, not safe, as she’d learnt the hard way before joining Saw Tooth.

In fact, Mae had had a mission in mind. It had been a while since she’d seen Terrel, the male waiting a long time to call her. Whereas before it had been a couple of weeks between each summons, she’d not heard from him in almost a full moon cycle. She’d set out, contemplating calling him, before backing off the idea. After all, asking for him would involve howling. Howling would give away the femme’s presence to anyone nearby, something she wasn’t keen on doing, and she couldn’t be sure that he’d be close enough to hear her anyway.

The pale femme had woken in the morning to fallen snow, confused by her surprise. After all, she knew winter was here, yet even so something deep within her felt strange about the cold environment and still expected heat to suddenly show its face. Like a ghost Mae flit across the frozen ground, leaving light indents in the snow that were quickly covered over. She moved with rare agility, light sprinkling of snow on her back almost glittering in the parts of the suns rays that were able to reach through the leafless yet thick trees. She stopped occasionally to shake out her pelt before continuing. The femme headed South, though why she didn’t know. Perhaps it was the fact that she’d not been to the lake at the edge of Blossom Forest in a while, or perhaps it was something else, but nonetheless she felt the need to reach it.

As she ran, Mae’s thoughts, as they often did, turned to Terrel. He was her first friend, her best friend and companion, a constant in her life despite the prolonged absences. She had many reasons to be grateful to him and understood the depth that her affection ran. He was kind, polite and always worried about making a mistake or harming someone. His hard past she could see had shaped him, he believed for the worst though that was not how she saw it. Maybe one day she’d tell him what she really saw, how he fought against the potential for darkness within him and daily won that struggle, had become a better wolf than any other she’d met both because and in spite of his past.

Her heart fluttered at the thought of him, an unnameable feeling rising within her. She knew her thoughts in regards to their friendship, and yet something deeper lurked just out of sight, something she was unable to identify yet. It brought forward thoughts one shouldn’t think of friends, like how handsome the male was and how much she desired to stay beside him for as long as he’d allow. It was hard to act how she should when he was around, but in his presence she found herself relaxing, not caring. It wasn’t fair to him, her desire to stay with him, for she knew he’d left the pack to be a free wolf, yet the femme felt she couldn’t help it.

Before she knew it Mae had arrived at Leisure Lake. Exposed to the snow, its long banks were covered and the water had frozen over. She halted inside the tree line, breathe taken away by the beauty of the sight. She’d remembered the appearance of winter was awe inspiring, yet memory didn’t do the sight justice. This was true also, she thought, for the male whose figure she spotted now. Terrel. A smile came to her face just seeing him from behind, a little way in front of her. What he was doing here she didn’t know. She scented the air; he’d come alone. She didn’t understand why that put her in a better mood, why the possibility that he’d met another lone wolf to share adventures with caused her to feel the emotion of jealousy, one she tried to remain stranger to. However it seemed her worries were safe for now, for the male was alone as he’d been at all their previous meetings.

Mae thought about calling out to him, and was about to do so when something better came to mind. She chuckled inwardly, well aware that only a short year ago she’d never have thought of doing something so rash. Dipping into a crouch, the femme stalked forward into the deeper snow. She moved slowly, attempting to make no sound, until she felt she was close enough. Then, with a sudden burst of energy, she cleared the remaining distance in three quick bounds before jumping in an arc so that she landed sprawled over his back, crashing into him with no evidence of the grace shown through the leap. “Terrel,” she breathed into his ear, a quiet laugh held restrained in her voice.
