we do what we have to when we fall; danny

“You know,” Lunarian said thoughtfully, as Dylan stood at the edge of the moat pulling off his pyjama bottoms, “you could have just asked for them to heat some water for a bath.” The boy threw his familiar a look. Lu shook his head, sighing as he rolled his shoulders in a shrug, he took the point, you couldn’t really swim in a bath...but it really was a bit of a chilly morning. Dylan didn’t mind living in the castle, not as much as he had when they had first moved in at any rate. They weren’t like the children of the nobles, they only had one room each and they were on the lower floors near Flynn’s office. He liked it that way. The idea of having a four poster bed and personal bathroom with running water made him feel uncomfortable. He was used to fetching water from the village well with his father and swimming in the sea; the basics suited him just fine.

He changed into his swimming trunks beneath his towel, before throwing it aside into the grass and approaching the edge of the moat. Dylan pushed his toes over the little lip between land and water, gripping into the mud, before he bent over, placing his fingertips in between his feet and then diving in. Lunarian had been right; the water was cold, but not so much so that it was unpleasant. It closed over Dylan’s head as he kicked out towards the bottom, grabbing hold of a handful of silt. When he resurfaced, he threw the mud straight at his familiar. “Hey!” Lunarian protested, giggling as the brown mess soaked into his lovely white fur, “what was that for?”Dylan laughed too, turning to lie flat on his back on top of the water, looking up at the blue sky above his head, “that’s for suggesting a bath,” he explained, “you can have one now.”

“Danny!” Dylan shouted, pounding his fist against the door of his brother’s bedroom, “Danny! Are you awake!? Get up!” They had agreed that they were going to start training that morning, and it was almost nine o clock! Dylan had been up since six. His hair was still wet, the tips dripping onto the shoulders of his green t-shirt. He liked to keep it long, not so long that it looked like girl’s hair, but long enough that it curled around his ears and flopped into his eyes a little. Dylan liked it best after he had been swimming in the sea and the salt water weighed it down making it look all messy and windswept. Danny, it seemed, did not agree. Dylan gaped at his brother when his twin opened the door, “what happened to your head?” he asked, smothering a laugh, “where’d your hair go?”

It had been a day since they had been in the library, and he it had not been so short then. He must have had it cut whilst he was off learning things at the academy. Dylan was excited, having followed his sibling’s lead he was signed up for soldiering lessons with Mace. He couldn’t wait to get started; maybe he and Danny could walk over there together on a morning. Things were definitely looking up, and the book he and Lunarian had managed to smuggle out of the library the night before had raised a number of interesting questions. There was hope, and it lent a recovered brightness to his blue-green eyes.
