{THOTH!} howling ghosts, they reappear

Since Danny's entry into the medical apprenticeship, he and Sol had searched high and low for the perfect study spot. Somewhere calm, but not too loud or too quiet, and entertaining enough to keep Sol from grumbling when Danny was at it for hours. During the winter this had meant that the two of them had been cloistered up in the library more often than not, but now that spring had come and, with it, more pleasant weather, both boy and tiger felt the inescapable urge to spend as much time as possible outside. It had taken them a bit to find, but they had eventually settled on a secluded corner of the castle's extensive gardens. Wildlife was always buzzing about, giving the well-fed and lazy Sol plenty of things to watch from his comfy, mossy spot beneath the tree, and Danny liked listening to the birds while he studied. He particularly favored the sparrow colony that lived in the tree above Sol's makeshift bed; they were always gossiping and arguing amongst themselves and, even though they looked so somber, Danny knew they were goofy and friendly for the most part, so he always made a point to bring them some bread. His favorite bird was the one he'd named General; she was the lead female for the group and was forever strutting around peeping orders to the others, looking much more self-important than one would expect from such a small thing.

Danny was looking forward to watching General and the others on one particularly warm and sunny Sunday and had brought a picnic basket along with his heavy satchel full of books. Sol was, as usual, grumbling about something (this time the fact that Danny had forced him out of bed before noon on a weekend) and, as usual, Danny was pointedly ignoring his familiar, when they both paused. Something about their corner was... wrong. Different, somehow. Danny cocked his head to the side, listening hard, and realized the sparrows were silent. Frowning, he and Sol picked up the pace until they rounded the corner and spotted the problem. One of the castle's fat cats, a big black and white tom, was perched on Danny's bench. The cat looked quite pleased with himself, and had a few feathers still sticking out of his mouth. Knowing that the cat was extremely well-fed, both on the castle's pests and handouts from the nobles, Danny jumped towards it and yelled loudly, trying to shoo it away from the birds. The cat, looking quite self-satisfied, ambled off. Shaking his head, and hoping none of his friends had been eaten, Danny started to settle on the bench when he spotted a bit of blood on the edge. Frowning, he ducked his head to peek under it, and found General shivering there. She was bleeding a bit and it looked like her wing was at an odd angle; knowing she wouldn't survive long with her wing like that and no one looking after her, Danny steeled himself for a scratching and slowly started to extricate the bird from her hiding place. Though General peeped in alarm, and scratched and pecked at him a time or two, she seemed to understand his intentions were good and didn't do too much damage. He could feel the colony watching him carefully, no doubt wondering what he was about to do with their leader. Once he'd managed to get General out from her hiding spot, he cupped her gently as he examined her wing and, seeing it was likely fractured at the least, let out a small hiss of sympathy.

"Dumb cat!" Danny muttered angrily.

"Is she alright?" Solarius asked. He tried to lift his head to study her for himself, but having a massive cat face so close to hers made General peep and shiver all the harder.

"I don't think so, it looks like something happened to her wing," he answered sadly, stroking a gentle finger over her head. "I don't know if I can fix her..."

"Maybe you could take her to that one kid?" Sol offered helpfully, earning a confused look from Danny. "You know, the one who helps animals? Th... something?"

"Thoth!" Danny said eagerly, remembering now what Sol was talking about. "You're right! I bet he's around here somewhere..."

Gingerly lifting General in his hands, Danny swung his satchel back over his shoulder and strode off in search of the other boy. It took him awhile, but eventually he was able to find a castle guard who pointed him in the right direction. Finally, Danny stopped before a door and knocked. General added a soft noise of her own, as if trying to tell Thoth to hurry.
