when the days are cold

Renn was laughing, and everything was okay with the world. Danny let out a peal of laughter of his own at Sol's haphazard charge and slide across Renn's bedroom floor; it was kind of amazing, how much real laughter brightened everything and made the whole miserable day that much better.

"Ooof!" Sol said, shaking his head and grinning like a fool after his not-so-graceful collision with the cupboard. Danny's giggles continued until he pressed both his hands over his mouth in an attempt to get at least a bit of control. He was careful not to shake Nico free as the toucan landed at his shoulder, and gave the bird a friendly stroke of greeting. The tiger beamed, entirely unrepentant, at Nico's chiding, even going so far as to rest a massive paw on Danny's free shoulder so that he could poke his face at Nico, purring all the while. "I can't help it, they just get in the way!"

He landed back on the ground with a solid thump, turning to investigate the sketches with Danny and Renn. At her gesture he crouched over the sketches, his eyes widening happily as he studied them all. He listened intently to her comments, beaming with pride he didn't even bother to hide. His sister was going to paint things that would last forever, that would leave their mark on Shaman. How cool was that? How cool was she? Danny shooed Solarius off of the Nimueh sketches, his eye instantly caught by the woman's expression. It was warm and, though she looked gentle and kind, there was a sparkle in her eyes. Danny hadn't talked to the woman often, but he knew she cared for Thoth and always had a kind word for everyone.

"I think I like this one of Lady Nimueh," he said, sparing the other sketches a glance and comment but coming back to the one in his hands after only a few moments. "She seems happy and... nice, like she might just hug someone. It might be better with some flour on her cheek though, since I know she bakes sometimes." - that was said more teasingly, though he did add. - "She made a cake when Thoth and Prince Tristan came home safe, didn't she? She seems like a special lady."

Next came Morgana, whose sketches took a bit more consideration. Eventually, he settled on one that showed her smiling, but with a fierce sort of expression in her eyes. Morgana was a force to be reckoned with, he thought. Very smart and compassionate, but no pushover. She'd not only healed Torram after he'd been attacked, but had even fought off the monsters and rescued him. That made her special too. The King Arthur, whom Danny had always looked up to. He was a fair ruler, and kind to boot. Danny had the trouble with his selection, holding up two of the four. One was similar to Morgana's, showing a fierce light in their king's eyes, and another was a softer one that made Danny think he was looking at Tristan at the time. "I can't pick between these two!"

Tristan was an easy pick, since Danny knew him a bit better than the others. They weren't close, but Tristan was a friend of a friend through Thoth (even though Danny wasn't sure Thoth considered him a friend, Danny definitely thought of Thoth that way). Tristan's expression was open and laughing; there was a lot of potential in that sketch, shining through in his grin. Tristan would be a good king someday, but for now he was a teenager on the cusp of adulthood.

Lord Mordred, though, was a toughie. Danny had only seen him at dinners and knew very little about him. He gnawed his lower lip in thought. "Maybe you should ask Flynn about these two, I bet he knows a lot more about them all than I do."

Renn's words caused Danny to look up from the sketches, a self-deprecating grin forming on his face as he absently poked at his hair (which was now hard as rock). "Oh, I... spilled something at the clinic," he wrinkled his nose at the memory. "Thankfully it wasn't all that important or bad or anything, but it sure was sticky."

"It tastes like syrup!" Sol chimed in helpfully from across the room, where he was poking his nose into the sketches of the king. Danny glowered at him, not finding his opinion very helpful. "I kind of like it!"

Danny rolled his eyes and turned back to his sister, plopping down next to her after a second.

"Dr. Gupta is great!" Danny gushed. It was the truth, visible in the way his eyes lit up and the fact his hand gestures were bigger. "He's so patient and so smart, he knows all kinds of stuff. You should hear his stories from Earth. Did you know they don't use magic for almost anything? It's come in handy with everything going on, cuz we can't use any magic to heal or anything. I can do stitches perfect now! And set broken bones, and..." The rambling continued on for a few more moments, saying more about Danny than the boy realized. He was eager to talk about what he was learning, and had bottled up a lot of it because he knew everyone was preoccupied and busy with their own lives. Having Renn all to himself, and listening to him, made the words fall out as fast as he could get them going. After a bit, he wound back around to the original questions. "His name is Khasekhemwy! He's pretty neat too, though he really doesn't like Sol."

"He thinks I'm gonna eat him or something, and I didn't even show my teeth or growl or nothing," Sol said, sounding a bit huffy about it. "I swear!"

Danny nodded and smiled a little, adding: "He's pretty strict too, and I always have a ton of homework, but it's come in handy with the translations we've been doing. And I can write my name in hieroglyphs, I did everyone's! Wanna see?"

Danny was already up and dashing back to his bag, pulling out his now sticky pad of medicinal herbs and carrying it in with him along with the page of hieroglyphs he'd done for the family. He'd carefully written the translations underneath, the clear handwriting a sign he'd done so very carefully and with painstaking effort. Henry was omitted, though not intentionally. His medicinal herbs journal was discarded at his feet, forgotten in his excitement.
