some prayers never know; danny continued

“Cooks are reporting food missing from the kitchens again,” Flynn said with a sigh as he unbuckled his sword belt and threw himself down into the waiting chair. He had been on his feet solidly for four hours and they had been protesting for at least the last two. His fellow guard who was sitting in a chair in the corner of the room glanced up from his home-made lunch with a frown.
Again!? he asked, putting down his sandwich with a sigh that matched Flynn’s. “You know,” he pressed, dusting the crumbs off his hands against the fabric of his trousers, “I’m beginning to think it’s an inside job, their problem, not ours.” Flynn leaned back in his chair, tipping it so that only its back two legs were on the floor and pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers.
“Unfortunately,” he groaned, “it’s our problem either way.” Rocking his chair back into an upright position Flynn reached for the brown paper package that contained his own meal. Renn had made it for him. He started to rummage through the contents to find out what she had given him.
“Fine,” his friend replied with a rather sardonic laugh, “but I’m the one who gets to frisk the maids.” Flynn threw his apple at him.

There was a knock on the door and both men looked up simultaneously to see who had appeared in the guard room’s entrance way. They scrambled to their feet when they saw that it was their captain, and Flynn glanced a little sheepishly at his sword belt which lay abandoned on the floor.
“Are either of you on the prince’s hunting detail tomorrow?” the Captain asked. He looked harassed and obviously had more important things on his mind than correct uniform procedures. Flynn nodded.
“Me, Sir,” he responded, holding up his hand, “first time.” The Captain snorted with laughter.
“Good luck, Flynn,” he chucked, shaking his head, “kid’s as slippery as a damn eel. If he were mine he’d get a good hard cuff around the ear.” Flynn smiled.
“Yes, Sir.”
“Anyway, I have to track everyone down because you’re setting off an hour earlier. I need you in the yard and on your horse at 6am sharp.” Flynn nodded.
“As you were, gentlemen,” the Captain said before hurrying off down the corridor again.
“He’s right, you know,” Flynn’s fellow guard said as he settled himself back in his chair and began to chew on a piece of dried apricot, “damn kid stole my keys once.”

---

“A six!” Flynn called raising a triumphant fist up into the air as his friend groaned. He scooped up the offending dice off the little table and scowled at it as it sat innocently on the palm of his hand.
“I’m sure when I shake it all the spots drop off.” Flynn collected his winnings (some basic sugared sweets) and slipped them into his pocket to give to Danny and Dylan when he got home.
“Excuses, excuses,” he teased, glancing at the clock-candle in the corner of the room. It stood on a little plate and little metal pegs had been pushed in at regular intervals. When the peg fell from the melting wax and onto the plate it meant their break was over. They were rapidly running out of time. Flynn reached under the table to collect his sword belt.
“Um...Flynn...” His friend’s voice urged him to resurface and Flynn straightened up, raising a questioning eyebrow. The guard nodded in the direction of the doorway. Danny stood framed in the entrance with tear-stained cheeks.
“Go,” urged his friend sympathetically, he had a little girl of his own at home, “I’ll cover for you.”
“Thank you.”

Flynn followed Danny out into the corridor and crouched down a little so that they were at eye level. His heart was pounding with uncomfortable enthusiasm against his chest as he reached out and rested a comforting hand on his little brother’s shoulder.
“What is it?” he asked gently, his eyebrows knitting in concern, “what’s happened?”
