aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

Kalgalath embraces me back and I can sense his concern and exhaustion through his heavy body. The moment I bring up Zig, Kalgalath steps back and turns away and for a minute I think he's about to leave me and walk away. I scowl and flatten my ears. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything. He suddenly looks so tired. His whole body seems to slump. My heart aches to see him like this. Finally he does turn back to me and I tilt my head, ears pricked forward, letting him know that I'm here to listen. He tells me that he needs advice and my brows furrow. What kind of advice could I give? I was never the best role model. I follow his gaze as he looks out over the pack lands. I still see the beauty in Aurora. Surely he does too.

When he tells me to walk with him, I nod.

"Of course."

I murmur softly as I step into stride with him. I offer him a reassuring smile.

"We will."

We will get through this. I have faith in Kalgalath. He gives me a small smile and then starts telling me what happened, how Zig left the pack lands without explanation. I scowl, my face filled with confusion. It just doesn't sound like Zig. Sure, she used to lie low a lot in Aurora after Sin died but she never usually left for long and to know that she turned on him with anger when he asked about it? Why would she do that? My eyes cloud with concern when he says that she challenged him, told him he didn't deserve the pack. Kalgalath has done nothing but good for this pack since he was elected in. How could she say that?

I shake my head.

"It's not true."

I assure him. I want him to know that I believe in him and what he has done for Aurora. I know he's the best thing that ever happened to this land. He whimpers and it tears at my heart. Now I guess I know how he felt when he saw me after Akina left. I nod in understanding when he goes on, telling me that he still tried because of his feelings for her. The moment he mentions Cody's name though, I tense. I remember Cody from before and I remember how Zig sought him for a long time. She was heartbroken when he left. Cody was to Zig what Akina was to me. The crush that never could be because they loved another. Akina could never get over Blood Titan, the father of her children and her first love. Cody had loved Satowra and when she left, he was devastated. He grew affectionate toward Zig but never quite showed her the same affection she wanted. Then he left and she was heartbroken until she met Kalgalath.

I listen with a furrowed brow as he starts explaining a situation with his son and their daughter Blayre. He says that she turned on his son and he caught her embracing Cody. My hackles rise somewhat since I know how she felt about him, how she might still feel about him. Would Zig really do that to Kalgalath? He starts stuttering over his words and rambling and I know that he's speaking from the heart, that his heart is hurting and he wants to get it all out. My features soften in sympathy.

"I'm sorry. She did have feelings for Cody. I thought he was gone for good. I thought she was head over heels for you, that you were her forever."

I feel like I should have been here to defend him, to give him support when no one else could. When he stops, I do too and I stand my ground when he turns to face me. I hate seeing the teary look in his eyes. This is not the strong Kalgalath I remember. Then he tells me what he did about it. He challenged her and banished her from the pack lands. He says that he feels broken, that he doesn't know how he can go on ruling. I step toward him, offering my shoulder if he needs it.

"You did nothing wrong, Kal. You did what was right for the pack, for your family, for you. I'm here for support, for help with the pack if you need it. Take some time to think. Stepping down is a big step and I know how much this pack means to you. You built it up from nothing after Sin died. Take all the time you need. Just don't make any rash decisions. You're hurting and that's understandable. Heart break is a horrible thing."

I offer him an encouraging smile, my eyes soft and understanding. I know well what heart break feels like. First Jaylah then Miya then Akina. Jaylah gave me strength when I needed it most but her vows kept her from taking it any further. Miya turned away from me because I had hurt her first and Akina...Akina couldn't get over her first love. All had reasons for what transpired but it didn't make it hurt any less.
