Nanook pulled back dramatically as the flailing child approached, lifting a white paw as if to shield herself from the advancing tiny warrior. I am a girl, Madeline, tell this tiny one that I am girl. Oh. I have a feeling her hands will be sticky. If she touches me, she might stick to me. Children always have sticky hands. The bear shuddered slightly and pressed herself against the tree's trunk. If it were not for the quick reaction of the child's familiar, Nanook could only imagine the horror that would have been upon her.
Meanwhile, Madeline was laughing, positively delighted by the enthusiasm exhibited by the little girl. She found such a display freeing. Maddy herself had been raised in a home where if you did not have Manners all the time, you were smacked soundly with a wooden spoon. Even with her guardian passed on, Madeline practiced her Manners all the time, but secretly admired anyone who did not have Manners. Grim, clearly did not have Manners and it did not bother Maddy one bit.
"So many questions!" Madeline exclaimed, smiling over at the girl. She could hear Nanook hollering at her in thought-speak, but paid the polar bear no heed. Her familiar was quite friendly, but wasn't one for the unexpected. It would probably take Nan a while to calm down, and Maddy knew the moment Grim acted out again, Nanook would have a hundred more things to comment on.
With a sly smile over at her familiar, Madeline replied to Grim. "Let's see, first that is indeed, a fluffy bear, she is a polar bear and she is quite nice and she doesn't mind if you hug her."
I don't? Nan squeaked at Madeline, still eyeing the girl with great distrust.
You don't mind. Really, you could do with a good hug, Nan. And you really are a FLUFFYBEARWHOISSOCUTE.
"The bear's name is Nanook, but call her Nan because its less syllables. Nan is a girl, and you are right I am a girl too." Then, for the fun of it, Madeline returned the child's clumsy salute, clapping her heels together like the handsome soliders did in her scrapbook.
"The pleasure in meeting you is mine, Miss Grimbaud, and the same to you Miss Gisli." Then Maddy winked at the jaglion, and dropped into a low curtsy.
"Ho, Grim," Maddy said as she rose up and dropped the edges of her green dress. "Let's see you curtsy!
