His attention was caught by several young puppies, all in varying motley of browns and whites. They had a length of rope between them and were busy engaging in tug-o-war. Except half the pups kept switching sides and the other half were tripping over each other's paws and dropping the rope in their haste to remain upright. Theoden wondered if any man, living or dead, had ever become seasick watching baby animals at play. The constant motion, it was a wonder...

"Are you looking for a dog, sir?" Theoden's attention was pulled away from puppy antics. A young man was hailing him from across the yard. He had stepped out from under the eaves of a slant-roofed shack. Thinking to meet him halfway, Theoden let himself in through the closest gate and lifted a hand to block the sun from his eyes.

"Good question, what type of dog I am looking for. But yes, I do want to bring home a dog." His eyes shifted a little on the word home because Theoden had no home, but it was a slight shift and hardly noticeable in the bright midday sun. Then they were close enough for conversation and Theoden found himself on eye level with the lad. He rubbed thoughtfully at his elbow and looked around, trying to figure himself what sort of dog would suit him best. He'd gone over this several times on the trip up but had been unable to settle on any one exact type.

"Maybe a larger dog? Certainly one who could keep up during long days of travel. Or one small enough they could ride with me. I've had dogs before, mostly 'round the inn. They were lazy mutts who liked fireplaces and belly rubs. This time around, I'm looking for a dog bred with purpose. A good, independent dog. A hunter, perhaps? Not too aloof though, I'd like a foot warmer on cold winter nights." This was fun, exciting even and he talked a bit faster as he shared his thought process. "I don't mind the age of the dog. I'll have time to work with a puppy and I've a place in my heart for the old-timers too. Sex doesn't matter, but I'll want them fixed if you have someone capable of that and oh...!" Theoden laughed in surprise as the little white flash of energy whipped past him and promptly face-planted against the wooden fence. As the dog righted itself and made ready to dash again, Theoden prepared himself for the impact. He was rather relieved when the young man scooped the dog up before any contact was made. A sweet dog, for sure, but Theoden wouldn't be placing any wagers on her future abilities as a tracker.

Still, feeling he ought to be polite, Theoden nodded in agreement taking care to choose his next words. "Perhaps your pup will need some work, but I'm sure there's a bit of potential in there," somewhere.

Theoden didn't hesitate to reach out and scratch the dog's head though, despite his misgivings about her future career. He noted the swelling on her face, but a quick glance around suggested the wound was more the fault of the particular puppy and not a general sign of the level of care this kennel kept with their canines.

"My name's Theoden, by the way. You are? Do you work here," He eyed the lad again rather pointedly, "as an apprentice of sorts? Or run this kennel on your own? Not, of course, that I'm judging the quality of your dogs by any of that!" He smiled warmly, feeling himself lose a bit of the reserve he kept with people nowadays. "Curious nature getting the better of me."

Under a spreading chestnut tree
The village smithy stands:
The smith, a mighty man is he,
With large and sinewy hands;
And the muscles of his brawny arms
Are strong as iron bands.
Longfellow
