Stunning blue eyes looked back at her from the rippled of the stream. Water dripped from her white chin, breaking the small patterns of light reflecting off the shifting movements. Adelheid peering into the shallow depths, looking closely at the smooth waterbed stones, as if they were the things that held her interest. At first she wondered if the mythical water spirits were hiding under those polished rocks and if they would speak to her on this day. The beauty of the light in the water was very nearly lost on her young eyes, the disappointment of having been told she was wrong too many times lingering on her mind. There had only been once when she had seen the magic others had spoken of, the words of encouragement coming from the lips of a stranger standing in direct opposition of the words her mother and sister had ingrained into her.
Now she stared down at the water, blind to the beauty and colors that shimmered up at her. In her year of life she had witnessed the clashes of reality and idealism, one of the two coming out as the clear victor in the battle. You could not have your dreams and live them, too. There was no justice that you cannot extract yourself, and even then you must show mercy. Even to those who do not deserve that grace. There was a time and a place for beauty, but that time was brief, and those places well hidden. Locked away in a child’s fairytale fantasy. Her heart and her mind closed, only opened in those moments alone, cherished in silence.
Her head raised, the growing locks of dark hair falling into her face. She held herself proudly, or tried to at least. This was not where she felt whole. Nothing tied her to this land like everything had tied her to reality. She looked around at the mountains that surrounded her and started to feel crushed. The half-truths, nothing facts, and meaningless implications of this world around distorted her sight and her mind. The solid stone under her hooves gave way to a shaky earth, leaving her with nothing solid to stand on.
Taika had whispered to her that this mountain called to her, brought her home from her adventures into the common lands. Adelheid looked around at the cliffs that loomed over her, the silent words she heard were screaming at her to leave. Flee. Run from this place that seemed to tell her nothing but lies. Stealing the dreams of her childhood from her mind and replacing what might have been pleasant memories with twisted nightmares of longing and wishfulness.
She longed to see the magic. She wanted play in the rivers of dreams. She had been told she was wrong.
Again anger started to boil in the yearling filly’s veins. Unconsciously her ears slowly shifted to flatten against her neck. She knew what had been done was unfair. Injustice was a lesson she learned young. Disappointment even younger. Unconscious deceit laced through everything.
Electric eyes looked back down at the face that had stared up at her. She wondered if she had the strength and the power to change that within herself. To bring back that magic and wonder a stranger had shown her, right the wrongs that she had been taught need only be ignored. She wondered if she had the strength to do it alone.
