By mid spring, she had come to the conclusion that the pack had become safe once more. She had done her best to avoid the newly made mothers and so, she had begun to venture back into Astearia's interior. During her time in the outskirts, she had acquired a rather small wound but nonetheless, it had grown bothersome. She had stood awkwardly onto a stick at one point or another, lodging a piece of it in between her paw paws and though it had begun to heal, it had an unsavory itch much of the time. It had been partially because of that that she had begun venturing into the pack land more regularly; they had a healer, after all. She had never formally met the wolf and yet, she had been present during their leader's return some time ago. It made sense to find her and, thankfully, Starshade had a keen memory when it came to scents. It had bothered her initially that the female's scent lingered alongside the aroma of childbirth and yet, it had surely been long enough that those initial instincts had at least subsided. So, she had taken to following it with only the slightest bit of caution, eyeing the surroundings in case some mate had taken it upon themselves to guard the area. Seemingly, it hadn't been the case. She was thankful for that, so much so that she breathed a sigh of relief when she had finally reached the place of the healer's den. However, there had been movement ahead. The moment had been subtle but certainly there; it made her pause some distance away as that movement came towards her. Wearily, she sniffed at the air and lowered her posture, crouched now in the tall grass. It was only when a giggle sounded off that an ear flickered forward, aware now that she had not found some small predator but rather, a child. It made her anxious in a way, for she had never had children of her own and she had limited exposure to their actual raising. Sure, she had briefly stayed with groups that had them but she had never been directly involved in their rearing. More or less, she had just been an accessory. Overhead, she noticed a butterfly. Her eyes followed it for a moment, piecing two and two together before she suddenly lunged upwards with a playful bark. Her position had meant she had a great deal of strength behind her, her back legs holding her weight for a moment as she grabbed the insect between her front teeth. Of course it meant the end for the creature, yet she had figured it was what had lured the child away from wherever it belonged. If she didn't stop it, the child would likely keep going. She landed with a thud, quick to gather herself before she let out a whine to the child, wherever it might have ventured to. She had done her best to not appear threatening in her actions but... children were unusual. They had strange fears and they did not understand things as an adult might. Nonetheless, she kept herself low, the colourful wings of her prize sticking out from her mouth as she sought out its rightful owner. |
