The young brute’s encounter with the alphess was one of the longest ones that he had ever had. Other than Magic and his previous family at Moondown Shadows, he had never interacted with one as much as he was now. Normally he grew uncomfortable with others very quickly, and they either drifted on their own, realizing that he was not exciting or anything special and he was just awkward and afraid. That is if he did not run and flee first. When he had first come to Aurora he had thought about running away from Magic, trying to find his way back to Shae and his sisters. But the kalak had left him too quickly, had slinked through the bushes and then was gone. He was still a young pup and had never had to track anything, and he was more afraid of getting lost trying to follow Shae’s scent than he was of Magic. At first he had not enjoyed being with her, he was with her constantly and he was not used to that with anyone for that long. But after some time he had grown used to her, more than used to her, had grown to love her. And now he could not imagine his life without Magic’s dark comforting form by his side. Tarly slept better whenever he was curled up at his mother’s side. He did not know when he went from calling her Magic to mom, but that was what she was to him now. Shae had always told them that she was not their mother, that she loved them as she would love her own, but that she was their caretaker. When Tarly had accidentally first called Magic mom, she had not corrected, had not told him not to call her that. And now that was all that he called her.
But now here he was, with Sebring, another adult varg, and enjoying his conversation with her. Normally he would have wanted out and wanted to leave long ago, but not this time. If she had not been as kind as she was, as understanding as she was, then maybe he would have by now. Normally at the very least he would be fidgeting, not talking much, and glancing around, wishing he could bolt. But now his paws were still in the grass, his grey orbs stayed focused on Sebring, and he contributed willingly to the conversation. It was a very different feeling than the normal high strung, anxious feelings. For the first time, he felt relaxed while being away from Magic. As Sebring nudged him to his paws, he smiled at her, watching as she too got her paws and shook her own pelt out. She stretched her back and limbs, sighing as everything popped into place of where it should be. Tarly mimicked her motions, stretching out his form just as she had. When he told her that he didn’t mind talking to her, the femme’s smile widened and he looked down at his paws, shuffling them slightly as he waited to see where they would go.
“Well I always found the best to learn was to just wander around. And even though I might know this place like the back of my paw, I’m bound to find something new every time I go for a walk. A little stroll around Aurora just to see what we can see.” He nodded his black striped head at her words, agreeing that a casual walk might be best. He still was not sure what areas of Aurora he had seen with Magic and which ones he had not. He often preferred to stay home, but Magic was social and enjoyed gong out for walks, so he followed her many times, preferring to stay with her. Sebring’s grey form pushed through the trees, and Tarly followed her wagging plume. The sunlight from above the trees leaked through the branches and leaves, and he kept getting distracted by random things in the bushes, but Sebring stayed patient with him, letting him catch up with her. Tarly only became curious and interested in other things when he felt comfortable and safe enough, and he got that feeling with Magic, and now with the alphess of Aurora.
They ran into a patch of brambles, and normally the brute would go around it, but Sebring stepped forward, pulling the brambles aside to let him pass. He was hesitant for a second, looking at the darker area that he would have to pass through to get to the other side. The familiar feeling of fear swept through him, and his unsure grey orbs looked up to Sebring for a moment before forcing his smaller form to push through. Really the dark spot was very small and the second his paws stepped forward he could see the light on the other side, and it was only two or three steps he had to take before he was on the other side and the female was following right behind him. When she joined him again her vocals caught his attention once more. “Right? Left? Or Straight ahead?” Tarly was not expecting her to ask him which way to go, but he was okay with speaking up. As long as it was just the two of them. ”Um…Right.” For once he spoke without stuttering, even though it was only two words. He waited a moment to let her go first before following behind, his shorter stilts moving faster than her taller ones to keep up, though it was easier for him to keep up with her than it was to keep up with Magic. What he didn’t know was that it was because Sebring was pregnant and her walks took a little bit longer than it normally would with all the extra weight that she was carrying. As the pair walked on together, he thought about remaining silent like he normally would. But the femme had been so kind to him, so understanding and wanting to talk, that he still wished to speak with her. ”S…so what’s your favorite part about living here?” The young brute stuttered for a moment, not used to being the one asking questions.
