Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

"Dance, my little puppets,
set your soul free.
Dance, my little puppets,
dance just for me."
- verse iii, sandy nobody
Grimoire’s ears perked forwards in mild amusement of the puppy’s response. How did that make any sense at all? Oh. Wait. Grimoire tilted her head as she observed the way the multi colored pup lifted her nose and inhaled. Well… she had some idea, though apparently didn’t understand the purpose of such important wolf attributes. However, instinct took over the puppy and for a brief moment, her darling over-sized ears darted to follow the delectable scent, followed by her shining eyes. Ah! There was natural talent in this pup. Grimoire’s tail stiffened in surprise at being attacked with puppy licks to her chin.

Soon after, her pride curled into a spring of delight. Oh, the feeling of being important! It loaded the coil with a sense of purpose and Grimoire grinned ferociously at the little muffin begging her. She pushed the pup away with a paw and looked as if she were seriously debating by rolling her eyes away. Then, she sighed and nodded,

"Oh, alright. We’ll try tracking down a rabbit first… then we’ll try something a little larger.”

Grimoire grinned mischievously at the pup and then lazily rolled off her rock and landed lightly in the grass. She sang as she trotted forwards,

"Silence is key, but not extravagantly.
Then next is scent, four directions spent.
Fourth is stalking, with the help of hearing.
And last is sight, be what it might.”

Grimoire paused in the midst of tall grass that hid her from view, though she expected her little student had followed her and was close enough to see her, or at least hear her.

"Like the song, now. Use your sense of smell to pick up rabbit stench. Then, we must follow it carefully. Your ears will help to tell you where the rabbit is moving and how far away it is, as will the strength of its smell. Lastly, you must catch a glimpse of its fur. When you do this, you’re ready to chase it. The goal is to try and pin it to the ground.”

Grimoire slide through the field as she spoke, checking every so often to ensure that her pupil was close behind. It took longer than usual since Grimoire was talking, and that caused the panicky creatures to scamper back to their holes. However, it was beneficial. It would give her calico-pup a bit to follow the method Grimoire used to wind her way blindly through the field. She immediately slowed and her pawsteps became more timid as she neared her prey. Then, through two reeds of grass, she saw the light gray fur.

She motioned for her student to have at it. Grimoire could chase rabbits all day, but she wanted Calico here to learn. She could chase this rabbit back to its den, or maybe she’d end up pinning this one. Grimoire would prefer not; the pup should get some practice with using her own senses, but Grimoire wouldn’t complain either way. She’d shown how it was down, explained it, and now it was time for Calico to try it out.
