10 thing you probably didn’t know about Croe
in which we discover Dema’s obsession with names and their meanings

1) Croe is a reimagining of one of my earliest characters, who I played at Alanor in 2003, when Riana still ran the site. My first Croe was a bit of an Akasha-from-QotD type of character. They share a name and have a similar look, but the original Croe was a femme fatale and a social climber, so I made the new Croe more aloof and antagonistic toward authority, and violent instead of sexy. They both have a lot of inner darkness but are capable of a lot more loyalty than most would guess.

2) Croe is Greek by nationality, but her actual lineage is a mix of Greek, Persian and Egyptian. She looks very ethnically ambiguous.

3) English is (obviously, now) not her first language. But before Croe became magically polylingual, she already knew several languages and was very gifted, linguistically – Greek is her native tongue, but she learned English in primary school and Italian in High school, then went on to study Arabic in college. Her ease of learning languages is one of the qualities that appealed her to the Alliance as a spy.

4) Croe would never have become a pirate if she hadn’t had amnesia when she arrived in Shaman. Since she washed up in Apeliotes and was immediately captured, piracy seemed the most likely means of survival, but if she had remembered her loyalties to her partner and Allianah, she would have risked an escape.

5) “Nepenthe” is a drug described in Homer's Odyssey as banishing grief or trouble from a person's mind – a potion of forgetting. It’s also the scientific name for the genus of old world Pitcher plants, which are a type of carnivorous plant. “Croe” is a pet-name shortened from her surname, “Kroneon,” which basically translates to “child of Kronos,” the greek god of time.

6) “Nepenthe” is basically pronounced Neh-pen-tuh/eh (short ending sound). “Kroneon” is Chron-eh-on. But “Croe” sounds like the bird, as you’d expect.

7) Croe’s mother’s name is Xanthippe. She is named after the wife of Socrates/matron of ancient Athens. I’m implying a lot of things about Croe’s family, their social standing/status, etc, lol.

8) I think most people assume Croe is tall, but she’s actually really average in height – about 5’6” – and slender but muscular in build. She’d probably have what would be considered an unhealthy body fat percentage, and looks a bit like a marathon runner in that respect (but with a more defined upper body…so maybe a rock-climber?). She has basically no boobs, and is the only character I’ve ever played that wasn’t busty (because, like, I can’t even imagine it.)

9) Croe can dance very well, and sing passably well. Both were something of a requirement by her overbearing, hopelessly traditional parents

10) Croe’s tattoos are not symbolic, but she did get each one at pivotal moments of her life, to serve as reminders of her story. When she forgot the story, they became purely ornamental, but now she’ll begin re-associating them her memories.
