His accent was thick and foreign, sticky like old syrup. It seemed fake and wrong. Pilar didn’t like it. Her oddly shaped ears flicked backward, distrustful. He talked entirely too much—spitting out lies, she was sure. She kept her dark eyes locked onto him, refusing to move away from her friend. Pilar was about to push into the other mare, urging her to run away with her for sure this time, but Silvi had already decided that this strange stallion could be counted as a friend as well.

Pilar didn’t know what to do. She would not leave Silvanus, but Jaxon made her so uncomfortable she couldn’t stand being near him. Her friend touched her gently with her nose and assured her that she wouldn’t let anything happen to her. She wanted to believe her, truly, but Pilar did not know if she was capable of keeping her promise.

Suddenly, anger welled up within the seal brown girl’s chest. She was mad that Jaxon would dare try and take advantage of her and her friend. That he would tell so many lies to her face so that sweet Silvanus would simply take his word for it.

“I don’t believe you,” Pilar said plainly, ignoring his question and staring down the stallion with a stubborn firmness in her tone. “Prove it.”
