hell don't need me

She might have been dreaming, or worse. Was there anything worse than a good dream? Echidna didn�t think so, in nightmares you were glad to wake up and go one, in dreams you wanted to stay fast asleep because to be awake left you yearning. The dream she floated on was not impressive, perhaps a scene picked from her earliest memories. There was a mountain and long meadow covered in snow with a cloudless sky. In her dream, she could see someone far off in the distance but when she got close to them, there was a voice in her head.

Echidna jolts awake and comes tumbling off the old mare. She hits the ground with a thud and groans, it takes everything a minute to stop going in every direction. For a split second the whole world is green and then it settles back into place.

The old mare continues to eat, not bothered by her lack of rider. She snorts lazily and munches the sweet, young grass coming up from the mud. Echidna sits up slowly, shakes her hair out, it�d grown a little longer than she liked. Her dark eyes dart from the ground to his face, noticing the quirk of his mouth in that sort of all-knowing smirk. It was infuriating. Echidna gets up from the ground, she dusts the dirt from her backside. �I remember being slightly more graceful,� she says to him and shrugs off the cloak from her shoulders.

Echidna wears some charcoal tunic and thin trousers. She never dresses too heavy or too bright, it doesn�t work. She passes a hand through her hair and takes a few steps closer. �You look,� she starts and then looks at their feet, �well, you look like you�ve been through hell and back.�

Which was that too far from the truth? Hadn�t they both been through enough these last few months, years? Enough to grant them both a little peace and quiet? Echidna looks over her shoulder at the big mare and wonders why it always happened like this, when she least expected it.
