PERSEPHONE

It had been too long since Persephone had made a visit to the Crossing. For some months she had been caught up in her business with the Forest, and making her trips to the other islands. She had neglected the common lands, but shaking off the drowsiness of summer, she had decided to fix that today.

She meandered through the Common slowly, taking in the sights of the land and the horses around her. There were always stallions crowded around here particularly, searching eagerly for mares they might be able to cover or chase home, but there were plenty peaceful men and women too.

It was a mare lying on the ground, however, beneath one of the trees by the edge of the Common, that caught Persephone’s eye. It was strange to see someone lay so relaxed and peaceful on their own around here, and so Persephone headed over with interest, hoping the stranger wouldn’t mind the interruption too much.

She let out a short snort as she approached so as not to startle the woman as she came to stand before her. The dun mare, speckled with white, was clearly an older woman. Persephone was reminded suddenly of Evaline that day she had stumbled upon her in the Forest.

“Hello,” Persephone greeted simply, her lips curled into a warm smile. “I hope you don’t mind if I join you?”
