This is no ordinary love

Vita Nova stood along the shoreline of the Crossing Isle, her icy blue gaze staring idly out over the waves. Her steel-colored ear lobes lay limply against her poll, one twitching every so often when a more profound pull of the tides caused a wave to crash almost to where she stood in the damp and soft sand. The sun was low and brilliant over the horizon, reflecting rich pink and orange hues over the seawater. Another day was coming to a close, and like so many that came before this one, Vita Nova had little to show for it.

She yawns, revealing a set of jaws and two rows of yellowed teeth, as she lazily bids the day goodbye. It's a habit she'd formed when she was living in the Desert. Life had been so lonely there, so miserable under the rule of Koray, that the brilliant colors that came with the rise and the fall of the sun each day were the only moments of solace she could rely on. And now, after more than a year of living on the Crossing Isle, half-heartedly in the Peak because she had no where else to go, she found herself reverting to old habits, such as this. The only difference being was Nova wasn't quite alone. She had her sweet Nyah, her first and only child. But Nyah was hardly a child anymore. She was tall and thick and powerful, like her sire. She was wildly independent, perhaps a tad like her mother. And she was old enough to do as she pleased.

This new chapter in her daughter's life was toublesome for Vita Nova. She longed for the comfort of her own mother, Evaline, so far away on Salem. She needed guidance on how to parent, as she found herself time and time again arguing with a filly that was on the verge of adulthood nearly all of the time. The plan of course had been to stay under the safe watch of her sister, Oswin, until Nyah was old enough to make the long swim back to Luthien. But Oswin was being held captive in the Lagoon and Nyah had no interest in meeting "this family" she had on other islands. The pretty little filly seemed quite content with her life in the Peak, and the social circle of young mares and colts that surrounded her. Vita Nova was toying with the idea of leaving her behind and fleeing the Crossing Isle anyway, but each time she drummed up the courage to be serious enough about it, the looming guilt would bear down on her.

So the steely colored mare lets a low huff escape from her whiskered nostrils, trying to soak in the last of the day's view just as the stars began to twinkle overhead and the night's sky fade into a deep and dark violet hue. But before the light was fully gone, she spied that of a glowing cream-colored mare in the distance, not far from her, along the shoreline. From afar, she seemed somewhat familiar. And in effort to further delay her boring life, Vita Nova urged herself forward, taking short but brisk steps through the damp sand to reach her.

She was a sight for sore eyes, her coat nearly illuminated in the dusk hour. For a moment Vita Nova was transfixed by her appearance, then momentarily jealous of her uniqueness, followed by embarrassed. "Hey." She said quietly as she approached, her voice barely more audible than the crashing waves at their heels. "You looked like you could use some company. So, hi. I'm Vita Nova."
