Can Kestral see the whole world from atop the Peak? Can he see the whole world from anywhere? He believes he can. "I can see the whole world from here." Kestral says, a faraway gaze peering through the window of the mare's eyes and piercing her very soul.
Kestral only smiles at Rhadra's start. It's a common reaction to Keen. To say the relationship between horse and hawk is unusual would be an understatement, but they are bonded now, well beyond what bonds should be considered natural for their species. Kestral and Keen have been a part of each other's lives since they both were very small. The stallion doesn't remember a time without his feathered friend. He found her, fallen from her nest, as a young colt. While other foals laughed at Kestral for his outlandish ideas and strange personality, Keen simply listened. Named for his own coat, spotted like the kestral's wings, it's only fitting that one should follow him now.
A young kestral, small and unable to fly was vulnerable. It was the horses, particularly Kestral, that kept her safe. As time wore on, Keen learned to fly, and to hunt, but where there are horses, there are rodents. She had no reason to leave, and she owed the young horse a debt. Kestral, with his head to far up in the clouds, and his quiet nature, is vulnerable too. While his own eyes seek visions of the future and signs from the Gods, Keen is his eyes on the earth. Kestral can rely on her to alert him to danger, and keep him safe, wherever his may feet may take them.
"Only to me," The stallion answers with love in his eyes. "That is Keen. She's a friend of mine." While they may not speak the same spoken language, they communicate well enough to know that they are family. Perhaps to Keen their relationship is symbiotic. Follow the horse to follow the food, but to Kestral, they are soul mates, destined to find each other in every life from this one into eternity. Their physical forms may change, but their bond remains the same.
