He knew it wouldn't take long for the pretty mare to be noticed by someone else so it didn't surprise him at all when the scent of another stallion hit his nostrils. Turning his head, the Vanner put his dark gaze on the incoming male, his nostrils flaring in recognition. He knew the stallion from their battle over Mazarine and he didn't hold it against the other that he wanted her, or that he was successful in taking her. He only wished he could have asked why the stallion came for her. Did she look unhappy in the Desert or did he just want to add her to his herd for personal reasons? Was she happy now? Was she still with him or did she move on? Of course, now wasn't the time to be asking about another mare when he had such a lovely one before him now. This was her time.

It did remind him of his failure to protect a mare of his herd, though, seeing the tall painted stallion again. His ears flicked back for a moment before he took a breath and dipped his head in greeting to the other male. When the male finished his sentence, he scowled thoughtfully for a moment, watching how the other stallion used the term to sound charming. Guess he could learn something here, after all. At least the other stallion wasn't trying to get possessive or moving to force the mare anywhere, like Rougaru would have done. In that, Cain could be civil with him as long as he stayed the same. If all he wanted was to have a conversation and see where it took them, that was fine. The mare had the right to her own opinion and her own choice. That was all that mattered to Cain.

For a moment, the draft was silent, letting the other stallion tell the mare where she was and he gave his name as Solomon of the Cove. When he introduced him and his home as well, Cain nodded in agreement. Only then, did the Gypsy stallion find out why he approached. He asked the mare if he knew her from somewhere and asked if they'd met before.

For a moment, the mare actually looked peaceful. Of course, that was before he announced himself. Then the peace was gone and fear replaced it. The familiar scent hit him like a slap to the face and his herd jerked a little as his nostrils wrinkled in distaste of the acrid smell. He could still remember a time when he loved that smell, when he would do anything to bring it out from another being. But that was in the past. Now, he already felt guilty just for bringing that look to her eyes. For a moment, it seemed like he was getting through to her, making her see that he wasn't as he appeared. But Cain could see the tentative looks and the way she studied him, almost like he reminded her of someone...and she obviously didn't trust them.

The Vanner took a deep breath, his eyes soft as his brows furrowed thoughtfully, wondering how he could show her that he wasn't like whoever she was thinking of. But she was watching him as well, obviously not sure what to think about his voice trailing off. Maybe it was worse that he didn't finish the sentence. But Solomon picked it up for him, drawing the amber dun's attention. Cain watched for a moment as she studied the other stallion and when her expression shifted, he couldn't help but tilt his head in puzzlement as he looked between the two. So did they know each other?

She finally answered, saying she didn't know, though Cain couldn't help but study her a little longer, wondering if she really meant that, or if she was fighting some memory of Solomon. She said she'd never been here before and she didn't mean to intrude. Cain's expression softened further and he shook his head. "You certainly didn't intrude, miss. This is the Common, where all horses of all islands and herds can come to socialize, or to find a home. It's neutral ground." He tried to assure her and his chest tightened with the longing to protect her from the world. She looked so vulnerable in that moment, so innocent.
