awake the stars 'cause they're all around you;

Kon’nichiwa!” though it is not quite right; she dribbles and splutters as the rain runs down her lips. She doesn’t mind; she gives herself a rough, useless shake and moves a little closer to the caresses of nearby undergrowth. Her little white nose is high above the rest of her small, round body; straining to catch the scent of her new friend, though completely detrimental to her battle to breathe. It seems whatever she does she is still constantly snorting away the water that streams down her broad face.

She can hear the other amongst the familiar chorus of pitter-patters.
They are near. Her heart quickens.

Kyuui-fusen almost jumps out of her bright, crimson-red skin at the perfect pronunciation of her mother’s language – and, subsequently, hers – and one of her favourite words in the world; ‘friend’. She is too eager to reciprocate the greeting, bouncing forward and into the harder rain. “Hai,” she chirps. She had known every twist and turn in the topography, though now she couldn’t be too sure otherwise she would’ve vouched as such. She was a proud little thing. “It is home,” she cries with a flourish, arching her thick neck.

Then, she mentions him.

She jerks her head upward, immediately forgetting the rain that drums into her back and plops upon her forehead. It is a true show of character when she manages to hold her tongue long enough for the light-hoof to speak. She aches for him, this is clear by the slight twinge of her red lips, but it is obvious that the mere mention of him – and the lead stallion must be him, of course – sends her into euphoria.

I only just got back from a little vacation,” again, her lips twitch painfully, though how lucky she was to have her arrival coincide with gaining a new friend, “but I’m sure he’s around here somewhere”. She was wrong, but how could she know that the land had recently been lost to another? As intelligent as she was, even if she was greeted by the steel-skinned stallion she would assume him to be the beta. It would never matter to her whether The Dragon was homeless or the king of the whole islands, she loved him all the same. Once she finds out she’ll be sure to give him a big snuggle.

Though she would have exclaimed in excitement what a glorious, albeit lonely, life a traveller led, she is hushed by the change in the mare’s breathing and quiet clatter of the rocks as she shifts. “Well then,” she says quietly, motherly, “The Dragon would never turn away someone in need. Shall we get out of this rain and go find you somewhere nice and warm to rest?
