it’s been such a long time coming

good enough

it's been such a long time coming

Reluctance had slowed her strides as she followed Hollowpoint to the water's edge.

Behind her lay the only true life she had ever known; it may have been a mere shadow of an existence, but it was familiar. Comforting. Turning to gaze back at the isle known simply as Crossing, Aveline clung desperately to the fragments of her identity that remained, feeling an edge of panic as they continued to sift through her grasp. With Giselle's birth and Hollowpoint's return, she had come to accept that she must relinquish her world of fantasy and strive instead to shape her reality. Her struggle to accept this only served to highlight a disconcerting fact; for all that she had existed independently, Aveline had not yet learned how to live.

It was easier to exist in dreams than to chase them.

She had hesitated long enough that Hollowpoint's splotched form was now indistinct among the roiling waves, and hastened to follow, guiding Giselle with gentle nudges and soft, reassuring sounds as the sea rises to meet them. Concern for the young filly at her side overrides the pull to rejoin Hollowpoint, and Aveline slows her desperate pace to fall in ahead of Giselle, seeking to shield her from the powerful waves that threaten to swallow her, allowing herself to be buffeted and even pulled beneath in her daughter's stead. After another such submersion, the sooty mare surfaces, tossing her streaming forelock from her salt-stung eyes, to discover that she is alone.

Still choking on the copious amounts of seawater which had forced its way into her lungs, Aveline lacks the breath with which to call; in a panic, she makes a roundabout and begins to head back in the direction from whence they had come, her bleary vision missing the small auburn form that had been far ahead of her. Driven by desperation, she does not stop until her hooves are scraping the sand of the beach upon which they had stood only moments before. The sensation of solid land is an awakening; the numb detachment that had settled over her seems to fall away with the liquid that streams from her coat, and Aveline begins to panic once more, screaming her daughter's name as she races up and down the Crossing's beach.

The sun had turned from its apex and started to begin its steady descent by the time exhaustion finally claimed her. Sinking down upon the sands of the beach, Aveline sobbed until even tears failed her, and then she simply lay gazing unseeingly out to sea. Through the turmoil of her mind, one thought rose to dominate the rest; she had to find Hollowpoint. Somehow, he would make everything right again.

And so it was that she found herself on a different beach, the journey a blur to her distraught mind. Aveline does not even feel the increased warmth of the sun, cannot appreciate the beauty of the lush vegetation that surrounds her. She can only feel the wrenching pain of her own failure, a reality so harsh that she could almost hear Giselle's final cries as she succumbed to the sea's cruelty. Stumbling on legs that are too weak to support her for much longer, Aveline follows the trail of Hollowpoint's scent - the last thread of hope to which she could cling.
