Let there be fire.

Beschea

Survival had been his mistress for some many years. On cold nights, when he felt as though he had been close to freezing, when death had hung close to his body, and the only warmth he had was the memory of something pleasant reaching far back from his memory, he had remembered that his goal was to survive.

So he did not think that the girl would wander off into the desert to die. That would not have been in the nature of the surviving game. And yet, she calls for him, and he hesitates going to her, knowing that her only goal is for him to bring her to water, knowing that she hated him and that he was going to get nothing out of it. Perhaps she was lucky that Badr was in no mood to find corpses in his home, so he inches towards her, not bothering to get close, and still holding a very large distance between them.

Peering in the direction of the dunes, he knows that she would eventually find water, but what he does not know is just how unhealthy she is, for whatever reason, and assumes it is because in her previous home she had not been looked after, so he aims to change that. Nodding his head in the direction (vaguely, of course) of where the nearest oasis was, he would not show her where it was unless she asked him, instead of calling feebly out for help. “Keep going that way.” He calls across the sand to her, before stooping his head and turning his haunches to her in order to nibble at some coarse desert grass.

Somewhere inside the stallion, he imagined that he would go to her rescue if she were really in danger, and perhaps the looming vultures were enough to make him even a little wary, still determined to keep corpses from washing up on his rolling sands. Stubbornly, he tilts his head slightly to the side as he grazes, making sure to watch her out of the corner of his eye.
