Cold. It shattered her, broke her, tormented her, but she endured – at least until she was back on dry land again. Moving from the mainland to the coldest of the islands was a test of her strength and endurance, and she felt that she barely passed. Unless she made this island her home, she would not be able to deal with the waters come winter. Of that she was positive. Pulse was not yet sure though, if she would stay here. She knew no one in the little protected inlet she had discovered, and if the leaders were cruel or just uninteresting, she knew she would not want to stay.
Perhaps the best place for her would be with the bachelors, but she shivered at being under the rule of so many men. One of them might force upon her a child, and she knew she was not ready for that quite yet. If it happened again – she shuddered to think. Getting her, to this place, where no one knew her deepest secret, well, that was good enough for now. She would heal, eventually, enough to where she could start a family.
That day was obviously not today, she knew that in her heart of hearts. This in mind, she was still brave enough to wander into the heart of an unknown stallion’s territory in the middle of breeding season. She trusted herself enough to be able to fend off any unwanted suitors. Her back legs were powerful enough.
The bay mare’s coat shone in the afternoon sun, and it warmed her. The damp that clung to her coat would surely dry, and warmth would again infuse her bones as it has her spirit. Pulse was curious about those that lived here, and as she looked around, her pace a placid walk, she whinnied to draw attention to herself.
