GOVERNOR

Is this what death feels like? Am I dying?

His eyes are closed tight, the itch on his face still there and annoying as ever, but he has no energy to do anything about it. Just as the wound on his neck was unreachable, he was unable to reach the desire to fight. The one thing he was so good at (surviving) was slipping from him, and Governor feels ... peaceful.

I am too young to feel like this. To think like this or face this.

He is so deep in his thoughts that he doesn't notice the approaching mare. Not until she speaks to him. It scares him back to reality and he lifts his head up, looking at her in the moonlight. All he can see is her beautiful blue eyes. They stare at him; wide, worried, frightened as him. 'Get up' she continues, nudging his back, much like his mother use to do. The memory hits him hard and he becomes more reluctant to rise because of it. He doesn't say a word, and he plans to just lay his head back down again, but one word stops him from doing it.

Please.

He could hear the sadness in her voice. She was determined to help him get up, but why? Why is she doing this? There was something about that word, her voice and the way she said it that sparks a fire in his heart. The flame to survive is rekindled, and Governor rolls over. First to sit up right, and then, slowly, he tries to rise to his feet. He grunts and just how weak he was becomes ever clear in his struggle. The sound of the frozen sea water on his fur crackles as he bends, and Governor rises.

He rises.

Shaky, but standing tall with legs apart, he grunts and holds back the urge to cry from the physical pain he was feeling. The only warm part on his body was the wound; so inflamed, so infected. He doesn't look at her. He looks off into the cold forest, the moonlight touching everything. Finally, he speaks. But ever so softly. " I-I don't think I can walk. " He admits, ashamed. His thin body was doing all it could just to keep him upright. " You don't have to stay. " He says. Partly because he did want her to go, and partly because he didn't want to be a bother.

But before she did leave (and he did believe she might), Governor has one last thing to ask her. " Who are you? " I'd like to know her name. So I have something sweet and kind to remember before it's time. He looks at her again, his dark eyes looking into her blue ones.
