VIVIANNA
The day grows old and just like before Vivianna is left to miss the pastel colors that paint the sky. But it is not the tree tops that are at fault this time but the pain that raked through the mare’s belly. Lying beneath an old wide tree with brush surrounding her to keep her hidden, Vi’s breath rushed in and out of her lungs. She had been there since mid-day, the contractions leaving her exhausted in her suffering. Just as she was beginning to think that it would never end when the pain finally subsided as the child decided to join the outside world.
Raising her head Vi looked back at the wet bundle that lay still, the only movement was the rise and fall of the white flanks. Body sore, it screamed in protest as the new mother reached back to begin cleaning her child. At the touch the new life began to stir. Squirming to sit up, the foal only raised its head to blink open its eyes for the first time to take in the world before laying back over to rest. Vi continued to clean her child and only as she began to dry and the baby fluff started to stand did the mare stop. It was then that the foal seemed to come back alive. Hunger driving her on, the filly raised her head again and Vi decided to stand.
Reaching her head down to her child, Vivianna gave the filly a soft nudge of encouragement. At first the filly refused stubbornly but finally she attempted to stand as well. Legs like noodles it took her a few different tries to finally stand but when she did the mother guided the child back to nurse for the first time. As the filly took her first meal the mare looked upon her fondly and a soft smile formed across her lips.
“Christalily.” She whispered. “You will be my little Christalily”
