he who fears losing has already lost

"The man who fears losing has already lost."
-George R. R. Martin

His ears flick back with annoyance when the mare appears from the trees dotting the flope, full belly swaying with an almost comedic effect. Her sarcastic remarks, though he knows they come to her as naturally as breathing, grate on him more than usual. Evidently her new position hasn't changed her attitude one bit, he thinks bitterly.

Still holding his left forehoof aloft, he exhales and notes that she has stopped a fair bit away. The insinuation that she has done this simply to lean her tired bones against the trunk of an old tree jutting out of the melting snow isn't lost on him, but he doesn't believe it for one second. There is still a distance between them - an emotional one, that is - and he knows that she likely still can't stand to be physically close to him.

That realization hurts a bit.

"This damned brook," he complains out loud, more to himself than anything, when she asks if he is all right. I wish she would stop calling me that, he thinks, but offers no further response to her question. What she says next comes completely out of the blue. At first he thinks she is making some kind of sick joke, but eventually it dawns on him that she is completely serious. A cold chill, not caused by the wind, slips down his spine.

"Where the hell has this come from?" he growls at her, a horrified expression on his face. Ignoring her pleading request, he hops/limps a couple steps closer to her, tilting his head as if he hasn't quite heard her right. "Are you out of your mind, Winter? You're a mare; you're built to give birth. Don't go getting cold feet on me."
