I’m only doing what we’re told

Well, that had been a mistake. Nyx barely had time to respond before Chomps had retaliated against her bite, retaliated much worse than she believed she deserved. Of course, what did she expect from the stallion? She should have known that she wasn’t going to get away with biting him. Letting out a squeal, Nyx jumped away from him, her ears pinned back as pain and embarrassment flooded her body. Clearly, she had thought too much of herself, but she had learned her lesson. The black mare began to wonder if there was really anything wrong with being fearful of Chomps. He may not be the kindest or most talkative stallion, but she did know that if there was a threat on either her or his herd, she would be safe.

Lowering her head down, flinching slightly from the pain in her neck, Nyx began chewing motions showing her submission. She was too tired to keep fighting against him and well, if you can’t beat them, join them. She didn’t even bother looking at the stallion to gauge his response. If he was going to come after her, so be it. She had no more energy for this, and her first bite hadn’t even healed yet. Sighing, Nyx wandered to a nearby tree and leaned against it and closed her eyes.

Tomorrow. She would retaliate tomorrow.

She fell asleep easily, knowing that despite the hatred Chomps probably had for her and her hatred for him, she felt safe. Nyx wasn’t asleep long before the noise of others coming towards her woke her up. Sleepily, the blanketed mare glanced up and watched as a mare and her filly was herded, much like she had, to the opening in the trees with Chomps close behind.

Pricking her ears forward, Nyx watched the newcomers carefully. She hadn’t slept for long, more of a cat nap really, but some her energy was back and she stepped toward them, though she kept her distance. She knew the mother was going to be very protective of her foal, and since she was basically matching Chomps in size, Nyx didn’t want to get in the middle of that. She was already nursing more bites than she had planned on getting in such a short period of time.

Standing near her tree, Nyx spoke, hoping that perhaps these two weren’t going to be apparent mutes as well. “I’m Nyx, and that’s Chomps.” Nyx nodded towards the stallion, watching him and kept her body tense, ready to move out of the way if he decided that he didn’t like her speaking. She used her nickname for him, knowing that wasn't his real name but she doubted she was ever going to find out what his mother had called him. If the others wanted to call him that or call him a different name or just not call him anything she didn't care. Nyx didn’t say anything more, but just moved back to her tree to lean against it and closed her eyes. She kept an ear facing the others, ready to answer if the others decided to speak.
