This caught her off guard. She froze in place, blinking at him through a net of sand particles that a gust had thrown up into the air. When his expression suddenly broke character and creased into a smile, she followed suit with a nervous little grin of her own, though internally she was kicking herself at having not caught the edge of dry humor in his voice. His introduction was swiftly followed by a change of topic. Sable scrambled to keep up with her shorter companion, a little overwhelmed by his sudden impatience (though she sensed he didn’t truly mean anything by it). In his shadow, she felt like a jittery little sparrow beside a cawing crow. This mental image was quickly replaced by a real-life one as they crested the dune, however. Before them, like golden sea frozen in time, undulated the landscape of what was apparently Xanti’s home. It seemed endless, sprawling away in every direction to the very edge of the blue horizon. The young mare’s mouth parted in awe as she took it all in.
But she was being left behind again. Sable half-ran, half-slid down the side of the dune to catch up with the eager stallion. When he tossed another question her way, she fumbled hastily for an answer. “I, uh, I wouldn’t have any idea. Um,” she pondered outloud as the breeze battered them. “Maybe, your favorite resting place?” It probably wasn’t enough of an adventure for Xanti’s taste, but Sable had had a rather long swim, after all. I feel like I’m having deja vu.
