oh my mama, now I've got to go

"You too!" Ro piped back to Flynn, beaming at the guard. The otter's attention was brought back to the husky at Flynn's comment, and Ro eyed him with mock suspicion. Birch tried not to think about the gleam of consideration in his eyes: the little beast was no doubt thinking that, between the two of them, they'd be able to finds all sorts of delicious treats around the castle. The little otter burped softly then, having eaten his cake rather quickly, and didn't bother to apologize. "Too bad you can't liberate us juice! Juice is my favorite!"

"And it hurts your stomach, you little monster," Birch answered. Rochambeau pouted, his expression almost identical to that of a child told he couldn't have a sweet. Of course, much like Denahi, the otter couldn't hold this less-than-cheerful face for very long, and gave a friendly chitter towards the husky.

"Do you have a ball?" The otter asked, his head tipping to the side. "Birch wouldn't let me bring mine!"

Meanwhile, the fairies were speaking. Birch smiled back when Flynn spoke, the scar across her eye puckering slightly as they crinkled in the corners, and shook her head. "We'd only met a handful before Ro showed up; Danny's Sol was the only one we were really familiar with, so it was... rather a surprise. Especially..." Birch glanced from the otter to herself and back, grinning. They were rather an odd pair: Rochambeau was friendly and open and rambunctious, while Birch was more subdued and intimidating until you got to know her. Still, it was nice to have someone around who could pull her away from darker thoughts. Had Flynn shared a portion of his thoughts with her she might have understood. There were dark things, secrets from her past, that wore on the mind in darker moments. But their talk was of lighter things, happier things. "It's definitely been an adjustment for us, but a good one. Torram's started classes with Theo Grayson, the carpenter, and he's been doing well. Though I can't recall what madness came over me when I thought handing him a hammer was a good idea."

Despite the teasing tone of her words, there was no denying the pride in Birch's eyes. Torram was a light, keeping her grounded and focused when memories, both real and false, threatened to carry her away to darker places. Birch grinned at Flynn's ready agreement, ignoring the high-pitched chittering that was Ro's extreme excitement over another piece of cake. When the man continued, speaking a bit hesitantly about life in court, Birch nodded a bit. She'd felt rather out of place herself when she'd joined Torram's family in their castle, not only for her lack of royal lines but because she had run wild for so long... Well, that had changed, hadn't it? She smiled reassuringly at Flynn's question.

"They seem more than okay," Birch said with a nod. "A bit more serious at times than I've come to expect from boys their age, especially Danny, but they're both healthy and happy from what I've seen. Surprisingly dedicated to their chosen fields as well. Danny's going to be a brilliant healer one day, and Dylan's got the makings of a skilled fighter."

Birch was too much a warrior to let her sympathy show directly, but she knew it was never easy to step into the role of a parent, especially when the real parents were gone. So, instead of going soft as some might, Birch casually added. "They've both got nothing but good things to say about you, according to them you're something of a hero."

Her eyes crinkled at that, looking amused. She wanted to keep things light, but Birch had to agree. Flynn was doing excellent work, especially at his age, and she could see why they boys were proud of him.
