and i knew your heart i couldn't win

The mare laid eyes on Freya when she approached, but she did not react in any way. Freya stands watch over the chestnut even after Dogun joins them. When the foal comes from her body, Freya waits to see if the mare would rise to care for it, clean the mucus from its body and warm it up. But she does not, instead she simply lies there on the sand, not making any apparent effort to move. The foal is up in minutes, his gangly legs shaky beneath his body as he takes a few experimental steps, the cord that connects them breaking as he does. Freya lets out a soft sigh and takes the work of cleaning the newborn upon herself, pulling the remaining bit of sac from his body and licking him clean, hoping she will be able to warm him up sufficiently. With the wind that blows from the sea, there is a chance he might become hypothermic. Freya wants to do her best to prevent that. She doesn't even bother to look towards Dogun and the new mare until she is done cleaning him and feels that she has done a sufficient job.

The mare falls to sleep, and Freya looks towards the foal, and then to Dogun, who has wrapped himself behind the mare - she presumes to keep her warm and offer comfort. "I will take him a little bit inland." she says quietly, as to not wake the chestnut. "If we keep him here, the sea winds will freeze him to death as the temperature drops. It may be spring, but Tinuvel is still cold. I will keep him warm until morning." she pauses, looking back at the sooty foal. "I will come back first thing in the morning, as soon as the sun - and temperature - rises." With that, she places a gentle nuzzle on the foal's hindquarters, giving him a soft push towards the inland, encouraging him to follow her. She doesn't take him far, knowing when the chestnut mare awakens, she will wonder where her son is and might even panic. She leads him only a couple dozen meters away, finding a cluster of pines arranged in just a way that will protect them from the frigid wind rolling off the nearby shore. The golden mare settles in for the night, tucking the sooty chestnut colt in close to her body, hoping her warmth will soon alleviate his shivers. When he reaches a sufficient temperature and he has drifted into sleep, she does the same, hoping he and his mother will be alive come morning.

She wakes just as the sun is peeking over the horizon, bathing everything in shades of pink and orange. Stars are still visible in the sky, and as Freya rouses the small child by her side, she takes a moment to enjoy them. She does not often get to see the stars - usually she is too busy watching over the herd or sleeping to do so. Even now, her moment of peace is fleeting. She must quickly return the child to its mother for a meal, or risk him starving. She nudges him forward back towards the shore, keeping him close to her side. Being dawn, she knows predators may still be lurking in the shadows and does not want to alert them to their presence. As they walk, she keeps an eye on their surroundings, and glances over her shoulder every few feet. She makes it to the shore without any troubles, just in time to hear the mare's words. When they come into sight, she finds the mare standing over Dogun, looking much better than she had the previous evening. Freya stops at the grass line, nudging the colt forward to his mother. "He is here." she says, crystalline eyes shifting to Dogun and then back to the chestnut mare. She notices how the sand is still stained with blood and the mare's afterbirth lies shriveled in the red sand. Bringing a child into the world is not as pretty as she had once thought. "I did not want him to get cold, the temperature last night dropped quite a bit after you fell to sleep. I figured taking him towards the trees was the best way to shelter him from the winds. Forgive me if my actions startled you when you woke."
