One of the Earth

They had come to the heart of the territory. It was the place where everything seemed to circle in the world of the Inlet. During the peak of the year they were able to enjoy the moderately cool temperatures here, but had to leave in the winter. With that, it was stunning, even in the dying fall of the year.
Pagan’s nose moved from her side and his head raised to look over this wonderful land he called home. White ears and dark eyes scanned the terrain. Before he could even speak of it the stallion swelled with pride. “We are surrounded by sweeping mountains, covered patches of pine trees. In the mountains there are waterfalls that are starting to freeze and ice over at their edges.” He looked to the border of the clearing they all inhabited for the season. Steam wisped from the warm water that flowed around them.

“Hot springs and streams twist through the land, steaming in the cold and offering warmth to us when we are close to it. When we are cold, or sore, the heat of the water will sooth away our aches and pains.”

In the distance the sound of a geyser shooting into the air broke through the blowing wind. The stallion looked in the direction of the steam and the boiling water. “That sound is hot water shooting into the air. Around these things are deep pools of clear water. The floors of these pools are stunning rainbows of colors, starting with a vibrant yellow and turning slowly to the deepest of blue. Beware of this water though. It is scalding hot and smells like poison. There are many streams that steam, and some only flow after being sent into the air. Some of these streams you should not drink from, but others are okay.” A smile entered his voice. Once more he touched his nose to her shoulder, breathing he in. “Your nose will tell you what is safe and what is not.”

Again his nose lowered to the ground by their hooves, lipping at the vegetation. “Much of the grass in this season is hard, as are the plants around us. The plants come in various colors and in the spring flowers will blanket the ground, filling the air with smells that will take your breath away and fill your days with dreams.”

He took a deep breath, knowing his description would have to come to a darker side of his incredible land. “When the ground is solid under your feet and plants grow thick, understand that you are safe on solid ground. When you cannot feel the grass on your heels there is a chance the crust you walk on can break underneath you.” An ear flicked in his concern. “These places are closer to the springs and shooting water, and where the air is warmer.”

A touch of nervousness started to fill the stallion. He wanted so desperately for Amica to find this place as wonderful as he did. To feel the safety but thrill the Inlet had to offer. Already, even having only been on the island for mere moments, this land felt more like his home than it had when she had been absent. For the first season of his life here he had come to know the land and feel as one with it.He was finding it was the ones who came to share it with him that made this land truly powerful to him.
