Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

The soft skin around my nostrils flare as I catch a familiar scent in the passing breeze. It's too masculine to be Menkhet's. And it doesn't belong to the appaloosa stallion I'd met just briefly before. My copper-colored lobes lay flat against my skull as I decipher it. My heart sinks when I realize Asp has already been here. I don't know the stallion's history with the forest nor his affinity for it. His reign over the terrain was short lived, from what I knew. And I don't claim to know the bald-faced stallion well. But I know enough about his character to know he is relentless. And if its the forest he wants, he will come back to take it.

I am relieved when I see Menkhet's buckskin frame appear from within the trees and stride over to meet me. I can sense a soreness in her movements. I nicker to her as she nears, and notice some small blemishes along her coat. Perhaps I am too late, and she's already met the foe I've come to warn her about. "It's good to see you, Menkhet." I say with a weak smile and bob of my heavy cranium. "I wish my visits were under better circumstances." I say, a borrowed line from the last time I'd breached her borders. "I feel like you already know what I've come to warn you about. There's a stallion lurking around who I think intends to make Luthien his home." I say in a matter-of-fact sort of way. I see no point in beating around the bush on this issue. "He used to live here in the Forest. I met him once when I was boy. He was never particularly kind to Prairie herd." Several strands of my forelock fall gently over one eye, but I stare at the mare in front of me through its brown haze.

"I am here to reaffirm my allegiance to you. Whatever you need, when the time comes." I say sternly, followed by a brief snort. I allow my gaze to drift over the hazy trees in the distance, one ear lobe flicking forward as I catch the sound of a large osprey taking flight over the canopy above our heads. "I'd like to off you the services of my brother, Paradiso, for the time being. He's grown quite a bit since you've seen him last, and I think he could be useful to you now."
