Although Persephone’s answer was of little help to the girl, she answered cheerily and with enthusiasm. Though Persephone was not usually much for pointless chit-chat, the stranger was quite right – perhaps they could help each other – and so she allowed a small yet pleasant smile to hang on her lips. Allies appealed to her very much. And yet, at the girl’s next question, or rather questions, Persephone almost balked. The very questions the stranger began their conversation with where the ones which had been troubling her own mind for weeks. Although it was difficult, she retained the passive expression she had previously assumed – her smile faltered for no more than a moment, if even that. “The mainland,” she replied vaguely, trying to maintain a tone that was nonchalant enough to imply it was of no real importance. Then there was her second question to answer. Was there a reason she was here? Of course there was, although it was so tangled in Persephone’s own mind right now that she could barely explain it to herself, never mind someone else. Besides, even if it were possible, she would hardly tell the tale to this complete stranger. She would, however, provide her an answer. It wouldn’t even be a lie. “And simply to get away from another place, I suppose.” She seemed more confident, then, in the way she had skirted the subject, and quickly steered the conversation onwards. “And what about you? What’s this about a forest?” |
