The Bird of Summer

To me the quintessential bird of summer is the Barn Swallow.
This evening I visited the bridge under the Geo Johnston Rd. over the Willow Creek just south of Minesing. A popular nesting place for the mud swallows.
I saw about a hundred Cliff Swallows in the air and only one Barn Swallow. The BASW used to be numerous there.
I wonder what has happened to them.
At one time Nighthawks used to be common in Barrie, hawking insects under the street lights. They are gone. They used to nest on the flat gravel covered rooftops. I think they were predated by Ring -billed Gulls.
Is anyone seeing Barn Swallows or Nighthawks?
On the bright side Tree Swallows seem to be making a comeback.
What is your "bird of summer"?
