Talya gasped in joy as Aurora addressed her. Immediately she looked with wide, bright eyes at her father – much like a little child might when begging their parent for a puppy. Talya had never had a friend before, but she wanted one terribly and Aurora seemed as if she’d make a wonderful friend! They couldn’t leave her behind, not when she wanted to come with them. “Papa,” Talya whined softly, sounding more like a child just a few months old than as old as she actually was. She batted her eyelashes at her father, knowing how much of a sucker he was when she acted all innocent and sweet with him.

Psychedelic might have calmly considered Aurora accompanying them and maybe agreed she could, but Talya’s response made him look at his daughter in exasperation.

Told you. One or two good whacks upside the head when she was little and none of this would have happened. Hell, it’s not too late to start.

Psychedelic snorted, flicking his ear and not giving it a moment of consideration before he turned his warm, amber eyes back on Aurora. He wouldn’t address the fact that he couldn’t harm his child, because the truth was Psychedelic had never really been able to hurt a kid and Talya had somehow wiggled her way into a soft spot he never knew he had. The realization proved he was weak – he could beat the hell out of an unattended mare for no reason or try to raid unsuspecting ladies from their herds, be he couldn’t smack around one little kid? They were the easiest targets! So physically subordinate to him!

But, nope. Psychedelic could never hurt a kid and even if he grumbled the whole time, he could never say he didn’t enjoy having the little shit’s around. His daughter had taken that piece of him and swallowed his identity whole.

“We’d be happy to have you with us,” he said, smiling at Aurora before remembering her eyes were closed and she couldn’t see him smile. “The more the merrier.”

Great, so now you’re going to have to watch out for this girl too? What the hell, man. It used to just be the two of us against the world! No groupies!

Psychedelic twitched his tail, but his annoyance at the little voice was vastly overshadowed by Talya’s happy little giggle and her wide smile as she swung her head toward Aurora. “Oh! I can’t wait!! Aurora we’re going to have so much fun and be such great friends!! I can already tell!”

Psychedelic rolled his eyes. “Talya, what did I tell you about smothering others?”

“…don’t do it?”

“Exactly.”

But Talya didn’t understand what smothering meant, obviously, because she didn’t look too upset about the reminder or like she understood what Psychedelic was trying to say. She merely smiled at him, smiled at Aurora, and then pranced a little in place.

“Well, I guess we should get some rest for the night,” he spoke up after clearing his throat. “We can swim at first light for Luthien and see if whoever’s there will let us live in either territory.”
