DIAMANT

Some part of him was aware of the sound of an approach. Perhaps on some level he put the noises down to an animal, or perhaps he was simply too consumed by his grief to truly register it. Whatever the reason, Diamant did not react until a female voice cut through the air.

He sucked in a sharp breath and stumbled to his feet, adrenaline hot in his veins, and lurched sideways to put some room between himself and the strange horse. The urge to continue sobbing was almost overwhelming, but he bit it back, forcing himself to take long, shaky inhales and wiping his bleary eyes on his knees to clear his vision. Once he could see, he lifted his head to its full height and side-eyed the stranger with a guarded expression. She was a young mare, stunningly pale against the backdrop of dark evergreens, and she was looking at him with a face that could have been carved in marble.

Diamant felt shame flood through him. He had been too preoccupied to notice that he had wandered into occupied territory, though when he looked around now he could see the signs: bent branches; a tuft of hair caught on a shrub; grass cropped too short to be natural... His bloodshot amber eyes darted back to the mare, and he collected himself as best he could, trying not to dwell on the fact that she had stumbled onto him during an immensely private and vulnerable moment, and that he probably was looking like the epitome of pathetic right now.

Without thinking, he finally said, "I am no one."
